Mixtape Mondays – Spidey Stefan & Spidette Katherine – The Vampire Diaries

Source

On The Vampire Diaries, we’ve heard that Damon Salvatore is the vampire brother who loved his maker Katherine Pierce too much, Stefan Salvatore is the brother who never loved her enough, and Katherine is the evil slut vampire who only loves herself.

Is it really as simple as that?

The connection between Stefan and Katherine is one of the most complicated on The Vampire Diaries. Katherine’s love for Stefan, and whether this is reciprocated even a little bit, is one of the most hotly debated topics in TVDverse.

Stefan has repeatedly stated that he hates Katherine, and for good reason. But he definitely is not indifferent to Katherine, and arguably hasn’t had the same closure to his feelings for her in 1864 the way that Damon has in present day.

I feel like there are pieces missing from Stefan’s story that would give us any solid answers, like the exact moment he started hating Katherine unequivocally, or if this has even happened, and what caused him to swear off people blood for so long. I can make guesses, particularly about the first part, but the Kefan storyline lacks the definitive touchstones that we’ve had with Datherine.

Here’s what I do know: the love triangles on this show are a metaphor for the duality of our natures.

For example, heroine Elena Gilbert’s attraction to both Stefan and Damon represents the dark and light aspects of who she is as a person, such as her goodness AND her capacity for manipulation. Similarly, Katherine and doppelganger Elena represent conflicting aspects within Stefan himself. Although I have no doubt that Stefan loves Elena and cherishes the innocence and purity of the love he shares with her, I think the darker, malevolent aspects of his vampiric nature, always just below the surface, holds a certain fascination for Katherine no matter what he says.

So forget who you ship for just a moment. There are no rules, remember, when it comes to the heart ;). Let’s just try to work out what the hell Katherine and Stefan mean to each other, calmly and rationally. And since I love both Kefan AND Stelena, I’m not biased on this one.

Mixtape Track #1 – Pictures – Sia

Lyrics:

you have her pictures,
you have her pictures,
you have her pictures everywhere.

you’re covered in stitches,
you’re covered in stitches,
you think i can’t see them, but i know they’re there.

take her down from the wall,
let yourself fall,
you can’t keep her frozen, dormant at your court,
you can try to move on, tripped by stitches come undone.

you lost your big heart,
you lost your big heart,
you lost your big heart beating bare.

she gave you a new start,
she gave you a new start,
but you knew you’d lost her to despair.

take her down from the wall,
let yourself fall,
you can’t keep her frozen, dormant at your court,
you can try to move on, tripped by stitches come undone.

your skin burns and prickles,
your skin burns and prickles,
your skin burns and prickles when she’s near.

you try to play it cool,
you try to play it cool,
you try to play it cool, but you’re filled with fear.

take her down from the wall,
let yourself fall,
you can’t keep her frozen, dormant at your court,
you can try to move on, tripped by stitches come undone.

take her down from the wall,
let her go make her yours,
you can’t keep her frozen, dormant at your court,
you can try to move on, tripped by stitches come undone.
you can try to move on, tripped by stitches come undone.
you can try to move on, tripped by stitches come undone.
you can try to move on, or maybe she is the one

Stefan/Katherine Connection:

Pictures have played an important role throughout the Vampire Diaries series.

But no pictures has had more impact than the potrait of Katherine Stefan kept with him for nearly a century and a half after he thought she was dead, and caused more controversy and disagreement among fans.

Is it just a relic of nostalgia? A reminder of who he doesn’t want to become? A token of some tiny bit of undying love for Katherine? All three?

With all the “I hate yous” Stefan has thrown at Katherine in season two, it is easy to forget the subtle difference in his attitude when discussing her before the revelation that she wasn’t trapped in the tomb in Fool Me Once (S01E14).

Katherine doesn’t take rejection too well, obviously 😉

Stefan has always been staunch in his belief that his love was compelled by Katherine, once he was turned the effects of Katherine’s compulsion of him was lifted and his memories as a compelled human restored. In History Repeating (S01E08), he told Damon: “She compelled us, we didn’t have a choice. It took me years to sort that out, to understand what she did to us.”

Later, we find out that this isn’t entirely true.

Damon’s love for Katherine was real; she didn’t have to compel him to accept her vampiric nature. He even was willing to learn as a human in 1864 how to prepare for his life as a vampire, going so far as to trick a person into thinking he was hurt so that Katherine could have a Happy Meal With Legs, and kissing her on the mouth after she had fed.

And I don’t think it is a clear cut case of Katherine entirely compelling Stefan’s feelings. Unlike Damon, when Katherine revealed her vampiric nature to Stefan, he was afraid, but prior to this he was a human who in the very least was infatuated with the woman he thought he knew.

Source

In a flashback scene in Lost Girls (S01E06) when she first shows him what she is, she compels him to not be afraid of her and to not lose his pre-existing feelings, rather than conjuring up new ones; a subtle but important distinction.

Stefan: Your face, it was like a demon.

Katherine (compelling him): But you’re not afraid.

Stefan: Get away from me. Get away.

Katherine: It doesn’t change the way you think about me. You will not tell anyone.

Stefan: I-…

Katherine: Shh. We will go on exactly as we have.

Stefan: Yes. We will go on.

Katherine: You have no idea of the future I have planned for us, Stefan – You, me and Damon. No rules.

In Memory Lane (S02E04), we get a hint of what his pre-existing feelings prior to this compulsion were in another flashback scene. Stefan and Katherine share a moment after engaing in the infamous “no touch” dance.

Source

“I’ve never met a women, quite like you.I look at you, and I see an angel.I touch your skin, my entire body ignites.I kiss you, and I know that I’m falling in love.”

Source

Stefan tells Katherine: “I know we’ve only known each other for a short while, and I know I’m in competition for your affections, but uh… I’ve never met a woman quite like you. I look at you and I see… an angel. I touch your skin, and my entire body ignites. I kiss you, and I know that I’m… I’m falling in love.”

These feelings were based on the lie of who Katherine was pretending to be, and there is a whole argument of whether love can be real if you don’t actually know who the other person is. But truthfully, we can never know everything about those who we love, and that doesn’t mean that this should negate the feelings that we have for them. It’d be interesting to know if Katherine’s compulsion also meant that Stefan’s feelings were effectively frozen; that they couldn’t get any deeper than they were at the point she started compelling him.

In any case, when Stefan became a vampire, and therefore regained his free will, before the depth of Katherine’s betrayals were revealed and he still thought she was dead, he clearly had some residual feelings for her that were entirely his own. What those feelings were is up for debate.

For example, when Stefan discusses the differences between Elena and Katherine with his best friend Lexi in 162 Candles (S01E08), despite no longer being under any compulsion and knowing the manipulative, nasty type of person Katherine really is, he still defended her subtly.

Lexi: Well, let’s hope she’s [Elena] better than the last girl you got all sprung over.

Stefan: You didn’t even know Katherine.

Lexi: ‘Cause if I did I’d kick her ass… old bitch. Speaking of… where’s Damon?

Stefan: Inflicting misery somewhere.

Similarly, when he first describes Katherine to Elena in You’re Undead To Me (S01E05), he acknowledges the parts of her he remains fond of despite no longer being under compulsion to say so.

Stefan: So let’s start with Katherine. She was the most beautiful girl I had ever met. She had this perfect olive skin. And she had this laugh, it was ridiculous. I mean, her laugh would make you laugh… But, Katherine was also very impatient and entitled and selfish and impulsive… I miss her, but I’m no longer crippled by her loss.

The reason why I’ve used so many direct quotes is because it would be so easy to misquote Stefan or take his words out of their context and misconstrue their meaning.

When you look at all those words together, I just don’t think I can buy that Stefan’s decision to keep Katherine’s picture was meaningless. And it wasn’t until after the discovery that she isn’t in the tomb and faked her death, thus making a mockery of he and his brother’s “failed” attempt to save her life and the resulting damage this did to their relationship as vampires, that he became emphatic in his hatred for her.

That’s why his willingness to have her picture burned in The Sacrifice (S02E10) for an incantation was a highly symbolic moment for me. And it’s interesting to note that he was the only Salvatore brother who had kept something of Katherine’s, even though Damon had obsessively loved her for nearly a century and a half.

Let’s not forget that what drew him to Elena initially was her resemblance to Katherine.

I love Stefan and Stelena, but take his behaviour prior to his first official “meeting” with Elena in the pilot at the Mystic Falls High School. He spied on Elena for months to work out whether she was Katherine or a reincarnation of some sort of Katherine; curiosity was a given because at this point he still thought Katherine was dead so naturally a replica of her walking around made him do a double take. For this reason it wasn’t even too odd that he checked Elena’s medical records. But it went beyond that with Elena.

He enrolled at her high school despite not needing to go. Used his supersensitive vampire hearing to eavesdrop on her private conversations. Clearly intended to court her from the beginning. Pretended to be a person he was not with her, though he did not want to do this. I am not saying that the love he developed for Elena from watched her from afar wasn’t real.

But it is hard to deny that his actions went well beyond ordinary curiosity, and there is a slightly obsessive quality to the way that he pursued Elena. As I argued in my Stelena Mixtape, despite their proclamations at the very start of the series, I personally don’t believe that Stefan and Elena had epic love until a little later down the track. The way Stefan pursued Elena just reinforces my belief in that fact. Because you could argue that Stefan had fallen for a fantasy when he was infatuated with/loved Katherine as a human; and initially I think to some degree Elena was the personification of that fantasy for him renewed. Of course, later Stelena’s love does become epic, when Stefan has time to really get to know her fully and appreciate her as a completely separate entity to Katherine.

Mixtape Track #2 – Prophecy – Remy Zero

Lyrics:

Consider this a sign.
This is a train in the night.
And now it’s time for you to go.
You know you’ve had a healthy life, boy.

You walk this world like you’re a ghost.
Your hands are coming through the needles.

Sick of your tragic and the evils,
I am the keeper of the songs of everyone.

Look into the sun and see
your soul is dying.
Used to feel the faith,
but now you’re tired of trying.
Should have left alone
what you have stolen from everyone.
How are you feeling?
You seem a little sick to me now.

This is a coming of the times,
you are a witness to the movement.

If all you’re seeing is lies,
you had your chance, but now you’ve blown it.

You want this world so you can own it.

I am the keeper of the songs of everyone.

Look into the sun and see
your soul is dying.
Used to feel the faith,
but now you’re tired of trying.
Should have left alone
what you have stolen from everyone.
How are you feeling?
You seem a little sick to me now.

From the light on high,
a chance to change your fate.

Forgiveness falling down
on those who chose to wait.

Remember the time.

Find yourself home again,
deep within your life.

Find yourself a home again.
It’s a choice.

You have chosen your own.

In the old days
when the world was young and bright.

If you raise the mask,
who will lead us on tonight
in the summer skies, the stars, the light?

Stefan/Katherine Connection:

Find yourself a home again.
It’s a choice.

You have chosen your own.

Katherine has had significant experiences returning to two of her homes; Bulgaria and Mystic Falls. And no matter what, her choices have been driven by her desire to survive at any cost (“you have chosen your own”).

In Katerina (S02E09), we get backstory about Katherine’s transition from human to vampire that doesn’t necessarily humanise her, but helps explain why she is the villainess she is in present day.

The Vampire Diaries : Birth of a Villain

We flashback to her in Bulgaria in 1490, still a human, giving birth to a child out of wedlock, obviously a huge social taboo in those times. Her disappointed family took the child away from her immediately after it was born and banished Katherine from the area.

The Vampire Diaries : Birth of a Villain

She ended up travelling to England, and in 1492 became close to Klaus, who turned out to be a vampire bent on killing her, because she’s a Petrova doppelganger and has blood that can break an ancient curse that controls both vampires and werewolves. I won’t go into the curse more than that because it still confuses the f**k out of me.

Katherine had befriended another vampire named Trevor, who helped her escape Klaus before he could kill her and use her blood, and she took refuge in his vampire friend Rose’s house. When Rose discovered that Klaus was after Katherine, she locked her up and planned to give her to him because she was afraid of incurring his wrath.

Look into the sun and see
your soul is dying.
Used to feel the faith,
but now you’re tired of trying.

Katherine stabbed herself because she claimed she would rather die this way than be sacrificed. Rose forced Katherine to take some of her blood to keep her alive. Later, Trevor arrived at Rose’s house and Rose left Katherine in the room alone.

The Vampire Diaries : Birth of a Villain

Katherine hung herself with Rose’s blood in her system, which meant she knew she would become a vampire and thus her blood would lose its value for Klaus.

The Vampire Diaries : Birth of a Villain

She didn’t escape Klaus’ vengeance though. When she returned to Bulgaria after two years of banishment, she discovered that he had massacred her entire human family as retribution. As a young vampire she could presumably turn off her emotions if she wanted, but we have never seen Katherine as “human” as she was in this scene, reeling with devastation.

In The Return (S02E01), Katherine was back in Mystic Falls in present day, and claimed to Stefan this was because she had come back for him.

Source

Of course, this begs the question of why it had taken her 145 years to do so, even if she had been stalking him over the centuries at Bon Jovi concerts and his other adventures (This is a coming of the times, you are a witness to the movement).

One of the main revelations in Katerina (S02E09) is that she has actually returned to Mystic Falls to finally strike a deal with Klaus and help him break the curse by using her human doppelganger Elena, so that she can stop having to be on the run from him. Nevertheless, this doesn’t necessarily invalidate the fact that she wants Stefan.

Sick of your tragic and the evils,
I am the keeper of the songs of everyone.

I mean, we’ve seen that Stefan can be mistaken in his judgment of his loved ones. One of his flaws is to be “the keeper of the songs of everyone”, or decide in his mind who they are or what their motivations are, when frankly he can be very, very wrong about them.

When Damon was inflicting tragedy and evils on his life, lashing out because he was angry Stefan had been turned by Katherine as well when he originally thought it was only going to be him, Stefan said there was no humanity left in him. Yet in the Friday Night Bites (S01E03) scene where he says this in voiceover, Damon’s tender caress of Elena’s sleeping face contradicts this statement.

Through Damon’s relationship with Elena, we see that his humanity, though damaged probably beyond repair, has remained at least an eensy bit intact through his capacity to love deeply.

So is it so hard to believe he might be wrong about Katherine caring for him?

Katherine shared many of her flashbacks in Memory Lane (S02E04), but the very last one depicted is of her remembering a moment with Stefan to herself, so unless she is lying to herself, this moment is true and can’t be explained away as her being an unreliable narrator. In this flashback, the Salvatore brothers have been killed by their father with vampire blood in their system, which means they will be turned. Katherine kisses Stefan’s dead form, and with no one watching to present a fake story to, she tells him that they will be together again.

Source

You seem a little sick to me now.

The revelations of Katherine’s betrayals have hardened Stefan’s feelings into hatred, but that doesn’t mean these feelings are absolute. Plus, we know how much she likes a challenge. She even tells Stefan herself in The Return (S02E01) that he has become stronger and meaner, and she likes it. And so has begun the present day chase!

Murder On The Dancefloor – Sophie Ellis-Bextor

Lyrics:

It’s murder on the dancefloor
But you better not kill the groove, DJ
Gonna burn this goddamn house right down

Oh, I know I know I know I know I know I know
About your kind
And so and so and so and so and so
I’ll have to play

If you think you’re getting away
I will prove you wrong
I’ll take you all the way
Boy, just come along
Hear me when I say
Hey

It’s murder on the dancefloor
But you better not kill the groove
It’s murder on the dancefloor
But you better not steal the moves, DJ
Gonna burn this goddamn house right down

Oh, I know I know I know I know I know I know
There may be others
And so and so and so and so and so and so
You’ll just have to pray

If you think you’re getting away
I will prove you wrong
I’ll take you all the way
Stay another song
I’ll blow you all away
Hey

It’s murder on the dancefloor
But you better not kill the groove
It’s murder on the dancefloor
But you better not steal the moves, DJ
Gonna turn this house around somehow

Murder on the dancefloor
But you better not kill the groove
Hey, hey
It’s murder on the dancefloor
But you better not steal the moves, DJ
Gonna burn this goddamn house right down

Don’t think you’ll get away
I will prove you wrong
I’ll take you all the way
Boy, just come along
Hey

It’s murder on the dancefloor
But you better not kill the groove

But you better not steal the moves, DJ

Stefan/Katherine Connection:

Katherine’s done a lot to spend quality time with Stefan, like allowing him to fake torture her with vervain in Memory Lane (S02E04), an herb poisonous to most vampires but something she has built up a tolerance to over the years by sipping every day.

The heat between Stefan and Katherine before he stabbed her with a vervain dart to start their “torture” session is undeniable. Definitely my favourite Kefan moment so far…

“What is it about you that makes me still care?”

Source

Source

I can totally believe Stefan when he says: “What is it about you that makes me still care?”, even if it is just part of a ruse to literally stab her in the back. Kudos to Paul Wesley for pulling off this moment in knee weakening style.

It’s murder on the dancefloor
But you better not steal the moves, DJ

A moonstone is a key part of the curse that the doppelganger can break, and in Masquerade (S02E07) it is in the possession of the Salvatores after being like a hot potato that has gone from person to person in other episodes. Katherine demands that the Salvatores give it to her or she will make Mystic Falls “rain blood” (“Gonna burn this goddamn house right down”) at the town masquerade ball if they don’t.

silentwilight: 2x07, Masquerade. Loved this little moment. Stefan was all “Sigh, fine, I’ll dance with you. I want to save people’s lives, plus I am really hot”

t-v-d: it’s a beautiful night.

Source

Stefan, Damon and the rest of the Scooby Gang decide enough is enough and decide to take Katherine out at the ball. Katherine asks Stefan to dance, and though he refuses until she threatens to kill an innocent bystander if he doesn’t oblige, it is clear on some level that he is attracted to her and his refusal is just part of the role he has to play in this scenario. And, umm, am I the only one who loves how smug and playful he is with Katherine in this scene? I love the sweetness of Stelena, but I also love Kefan banter. God help me!

Though admittedly it is a bit of a dampener when Katherine takes “murder on the dancefloor” literally and bashes in Thing One’s spine to show her seriousness about getting the moonstone. For Stefan, at least. I was glad to have her dispatched!

Source

Later in the episode, Katherine is tricked into stepping inside a room magically sealed by a witch who is friends with Elena, and engages has charged foreplay with fights both Salvatore brothers.

Source

Katherine appears to have the upperhand when the Salvatores realise she is physically linked to Elena by another witch, so if they hurt Katherine they also hurt Elena. Katherine chews scenery for a while and gloats about this fact, throwing barbs at Damon about his “inconvenient” obsession with her for 145 years.

Source

At one point she also mouths to Stefan that she loves him, and if you watch carefully, Paul Wesley totally swallows in a way that cannot be accidental, and I am assume he was directed to do so to show that in some way Katherine got under his skin with the statement. I’m not ashamed to admit that the Knee Hitch in Eclipse gets me going, so this little swallow made me swoon even if it was for all the wrong reasons.

Ultimately, Katherine’s witch, who is also at the party, betrays her, destroys her link with Elena, and renders her defenceless so Damon can lock her away into the tomb magically sealed so that vampires can enter but can’t leave.

Source

Even this is part of Katherine’s game plan; as far as she knows she’ll be the “safest psychotic bitch in town” when Klaus comes because he wouldn’t dare enter a tomb like that as a vampire himself (though we find out vampire Originals can break the seal if they want and she is really actually a sitting duck). Kind of hilarious when the tables are turned on Katherine’s manipulations!

Mixtape Track #4 – Criminal – Fiona Apple

Lyrics:

I’ve been a bad bad girl
I’ve been careless with my delicate man
And its a sad sad world
When a girl will break a boy
Just because she can
Don’t you tell me to deny it
I’ve done wrong and I want to
Suffer for my sins
I’ve come to you ’cause I need
Guidance to be true
And I just don’t know where I can begin
What I need is a good defense
‘Cause I’m feelin’ like a criminal
And I need to redeemed
To the one I’ve sinned against
Because he’s all I ever knew of love
Heaven help me for the way I am
Save me from these evil deeds
Before I get them done
I know tomorrow brings the consequence
At hand
But I keep livin’ this day like
The next will never come
Oh help me but don’t tell me
To deny it
I’ve got to cleanse myself
Of all these lies till I’m good
Enough for him
I’ve got a lot to lose and I’m
Bettin’ high
So I’m beggin’ you before it ends
Just tell me where to begin
What I need is a good defense
‘Cause I’m feelin’ like a criminal
And I need to redeemed
To the one I’ve sinned against
Because he’s all I ever knew of love
Let me know the way
Before there’s hell to pay
Give me room to lay the law and let me go
I’ve got to make a play
To make my lover stay
So what would an angel say
The devil wants to know
What I need is a good defense
‘Cause I’m feelin’ like a criminal
And I need to redeemed
To the one I’ve sinned against
Because he’s all I ever knew of love
What I need is a good defense
‘Cause I’m feelin’ like a criminal
And I need to redeemed
To the one I’ve sinned against
Because he’s all I ever knew of love

Stefan/Katherine Connection:

Blogger pal Julie from TV Recappers Anonymous and I were emailing each other about music and The Vampire Diaries, as we often do.

silentwilight: 2x10, The Sacrifice. He looks so horrified, she looks so pleased. NGL, her reaction would be my reaction too if I was suddenly stuck in a tomb with Stefan ;)

Source

That would totally be my reaction to getting stuck in a tomb with Paul Wesley!

In one of these emails, she mentioned that Criminal is a song that perfectly captures the Kefan dynamic, particularly when Stefan is trapped in the tomb with her in By The Light Of The Full Moon (S02E11) after racing into it to save Elena’s brother Jeremy from Katherine’s clutches (long story). Because she is brilliant and awesome, she put her analysis of the song better than I ever could.

Julie: On the surface, the song is deceptively simple. Here is a girl who feels guilty about seducing a man, and breaking his heart.  And yet, the way she sings, and the words she uses, suggest that the singer is also seducing the person to whom she is confessing. (Heck, they even play snake charmer music at one point during the song!). She is appealing to the listener’s desire to “redeem” the bad girl: “Save me from these evil deeds, before I get them done.” and “Heaven, help me for the way I am.” (The fact that there is a religious priest / penitent aspect to the song, makes it even more naughty.)

Additionally, the lines, “I’ve been a bad, bad girl,” and “I wanna suffer for my sins,” are some pretty thinly-veiled references to rough sex, which we know Katherine LOVES!

silentwilight: 2x11, By the Light of the Moon. Loved the fluidity of this moment- the way they were in sync, but not.

Source

Indeed you get the sense that, while the singer is feeling, “guilty,” about her acts, she’s also very proud of her own sexuality, and the power she has over men. The line “I know tomorrow brings the consequence at hand. But I keep living this day, like the next will never come,” definitely suggests as much. It’s also very consistent with the carpe diem, “I’m dead anyway, so who cares?” vampiric way of life.

Yet, beneath it all, you can see that the singer has some genuine feelings of affection for the man she has hurt. And there is a part of her that WANTS to change, so that she can win him back. “I need to be redeemed to the one I’ve sinned against, because he’s all I ever knew of love.”

I think Katherine genuinely feels this way about Stefan, though she’s used those very feelings to manipulate him, in the past. We saw a much more vulnerable side of the Naughty Vampiress, when she was locked in the tomb with Stefan. I think there is a small part of Katherine that wants to be “good” like Elena, so that she can be worthy of Stefan. But, deep down, she just knows it’s not in her nature. And so, she will continue to scheme and sin, even if it makes her lonely, because it’s truly what she does best. This sets Katherine apart from Damon, who, I believe, IS trying to change, so that he can one day feel worthy of Elena.

When hiatus is over, if you aren’t already reading them each week, DON’T MISS Julie’s awesome TVD recaps, which are the best ones out there :).

Crystal Ball Mixtape Track – Running Up That Hill – Cover by Placebo

Lyrics:

It doesn’t hurt me.
You wanna feel how it feels?
You wanna know, know that it doesn’t hurt me?
You wanna hear about the deal I’m making?
You (be running up that hill)
You and me (be running up that hill)

And if I only could,
Make a deal with God,
And get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
Be running up that building.
If I only could, oh…

You don’t want to hurt me,
But see how deep the bullet lies.
Unaware that I’m tearing you asunder.
There is thunder in our hearts, baby.
So much hate for the ones we love?
Tell me, we both matter, don’t we?

You, (be running up that hill0
You and me, (be running up that hill)
You and me won’t be unhappy.

And if I only could,
Make a deal with God,
And get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
Be running up that building,
If I only could, oh…

‘C’mon, baby, c’mon, c’mon, darling,
Let me steal this moment from you now.
C’mon, angel, c’mon, c’mon, darling,
Let’s exchange the experience, oh…’

And if I only could,
Make a deal with God,
And get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
With no problems..

‘If I only could, be running up that hill.’

Stefan/Katherine Connection:

I think it’s pretty safe to say that Stefan doesn’t know Katherine as well as he thinks it does.

Running Up That Hill is about how men and women, by virtue of being different genders, can’t fully understand each other.

And if I only could,
Make a deal with God,
And get him to swap our places

So the concept of swapping places is about how if a man and woman could be in each other’s place for a while, they might both be very surprised.

thepetrovadoppelganger: -You’re playing me. -Am I? 2x11, By the Light of the Moon.

Source

In the context of Kefan, I think that Katherine will finally reach Stefan someone or he will be force to put himself in her shoes (perhaps by Dark Stefan re-emerging) and understand where she is coming from better.

Source

“ I’ve been in this dress for days … you wanna help me to get out of it? ”

Source

And I think this will have more implications for her other attempts to get in his head, like the Tomb Sex wet dream she gave him while they were trapped together in By The Light Of The Full Moon.

So what do you guys think about Kefan?

What a perfect day to do a Kefan post, considering it’s Nina Dobrev’s birthday today! 🙂 (I was actually considering doing a bit of a blog tribute to her, but am still not sure what angle to take. As you know, writing about females is not exactly my strong suit.;)

I am so honored that you put my ramblings about Fiona Apple’s “Criminal” in here. I hope I didn’t bore anyone! 🙂 Also, thanks so much for the fabulous shoutout. What I do for TVD is easy. The writers and actors do everything for me. I just have to repeat it. But what you do here, with these awesome analytical posts, that is true artwork! 🙂

Speaking of true artwork, it was awesome to see the “andiwaswatchingyou” tumblr again! (LOVE THAT!) They even added a few new scenes to the top, since the last time I visited. I’m starting to believe TVD fans are the smartest and most creative folks on the internet. (I include you and Amy in that description, of course)

I LOVED the songs you selected here. I actually have every single one on my iPOD already. And they are perfect for Kefan! That Prophecy song by Remy Zero (and the Zack Braff, Rachel Bilson sex scene that came with it) was the best part of the not-particularly-good film Last Kiss. I remember rushing home to download it the second I returned from the theater!

Amy actually first introduced me to “Running up that Hill,” though we did get a taste of the song in the TVD pilot. (I always liked to think of it as the Damon Salvatore theme song . . . along with Enjoy the Silence, of course!) I adore your interpretation of it, and the way in which it relates Katherine and Stefan.

In a way, that song also embodies the relationship between Damon and Stefan. Stefan feels guilt over causing Damon pain, by forcing him into a vampiric lifestyle. So, he assumes that pain and guilt, and takes it into himself, by living a life of bunny-eating self-sacrifice — a perpetual “I’m sorry, Brother,” that, unfortunately, can never undo the damage that was has done.

I think the song also relates to Damon’s jealousy of Stefan, and Stefan’s continual worry (at least during Season 1), that his own selfish choices, back in 1864, have deprived Damon of his humanity. As the series progressed, Stefan and Damon did get to step into one another’s shoes, through Stefan’s bloodaholic fall off the wagon, and Damon’s growing love for Elena respectively. As a result, the brothers’ relationship has grown stronger than ever before.

I like your prediction of how Stefan will eventually be placed in Katherine’s shoes (just like he was placed in Damon’s), and, as a result, will come to a greater understanding of her (possibly, right before she dies). Unlike Damon, Stefan has never truly dealt with his feelings for Katherine. And he is due for some major heartbreak, as a result, when she inevitably meets her maker.

I also suspect that Katherine will eventually make some sort of a sacrifice for Stefan and Elena, proving that (1) she does love Stefan, in her own way; and (2) is not the completely heartless vampire Stefan wants to believe she is . . .

It will be very interesting to see how all these relationships play out in the second half of the season. And I can’t wait to read your brilliant takes on all of it . . . 🙂

How cool was it that her birthday trended? As you said in an email, we Vampire Diaries fans wield some major power!

Your ramblings were too awesome to keep to myself. Plus, Criminal is just a perfect song to describe the Stefan/Katherine dynamic. Ha! You might be trying to be humble, but the work you do each week with your TVD recaps is genius. I look forward to them just as much as the eps each week, because I can always count on your insane wit, ability to deconstruct the scenes in ways I hadn’t even considered, and appreciation for a certain hot vampire in particular.

You know, it is funny what you say about TVD fans being the smartest and most creative folks on the internet. One night I was tweeting, and another TVD fan and I agreed that we are all-around the most gorgeous, charming, talented fans out there! If anyone disagrees, well, we’ll just have to set our favourite Fang Gang on them! You, Amy and Jesse in particular are fangirl geniuses who give me so much joy and lulz each week.

I’m very excited that you discovered Prophecy the same way that I did! Some sick, masochistic part of me said, “Dammit! You are watching this s**ty, sh**ty movie to the very finish if it kills you.” Luckily, the sex scene and the accompanying song made up for the crud I’d endured before then. I think the director was incredibly clever in how he matched up the highs and lows of the song with the various stages of the sex scene, from initial rockin’ excitements to pensive reflection to slow, guilt-ridden pleasure about engaging in illicit sex.

What I love most about Running Up That Hill is the heartbeat noise that throbs through the entire song. I guess that is why it is such a visceral song for me and something that I can feel through my whole body when I listen to it.

You know, I’d never thought about Stefan’s blood abstinence as partly a reaction to guilt about forcing his brother to become a vampire, but now that you say it, it makes perfect sense. Because blood drinking is a mark of the humanity he is or at least WAS worried that he had completely stolen from Damon. Kind of ironic that the love of his life might be the one thing that truly makes Damon reclaim his humanity. Maybe that is why Stefan has handled Damon’s feelings for Elena with such grace. Heck, he even said in The Return that he wasn’t going to fight Damon over kissing Katherine when he thought she was Elena because he didn’t want to kill the part of him that, finally, after all these years, cared.

I wonder if Katherine will make a sacrifice for Stefan and Elena that haunts him so much it could cause a wedge between him and Elena. There are so many possibilities with Stefan and Katherine that haven’t been exhausted yet that I just can’t wait for the hiatus to be over so that we can’t start exploring them again!

Sia and Placebo – can’t go wrong there, especially considering Sia’s Aussie and all :D.

Admittedly, I’ve never heard the Kate Bush original to Running up That Hill but the lyrics are just damn perfect.
Sort of helped me get through a messy time when a girl was snacked from me by a very close friend back in ’04 or ’05? When the song first came out.
It’s one of those songs which just goes hand in hand with heart break while still providing the eargasms. Just (in the words of Lester Burnam) Spec-tac-u-lar.

And Sia! God I love that girl almost as much as I love Martina Topley-Bird (who is featured in the latest Massive Attack album in case you were wondering).
I don’t normally listen to that sort of music but Sia is just incredible.
She (and Cloud Control) almost won Triple J’s Austalian Album of the Year, just being nudged out by Tame Impala (who are great, but they’re pretty much a CC of Cream, TBH my money was actually on Cloud Control, but that’s another story).

    Anywho, where was I?
    Sia
I don’t think I’ve heard Pictures, and I can’t play the clip seeing as I’m at work (I won’t tell if you don’t …) but Sia just has this way of making me want to move my skinny little arse like it hasn’t been moved since Afrika Bambaataa all those years ago.

Well done. Kudos. Bravo and all that Jazz.
    My day has been made.

Well, you have made my MONTH by shipping the zombie stuff to me, which arrived at work in a neat white package today. I was ridiculously excited when I realised what was inside!

Sia has the most beautiful, ethereal, otherwordly voice that I wish she had had a role in the Lord of th Rings trilogy when the movies were being filmed just to hear her speak Elvish. I agree that she was gypped out of what should have been a sure fire Triple J win.

Running Up That Hill never fails to give me chills even after all this time of listening to it. Hearing that gradual build in the music crescendo, it reminds you that things worth having don’t come easy and without an uphill battle. Look, there’s some coffee shop philosophy for ya 😉

Anyway, that chick who allowed herself to be snacked up? If a wall of shame existed on Spidey Sense, she would no doubt find herself inducted on it 🙂

Well, one vampire movie, the rest are other things like gore porn (for want of a better name for Hostel) bikie and a modern day western.
Most of it just in there cause for its shock content. Dead Man is in there because i wish to share the awesomeness that is Jim Jarmusch.

“things worth having don’t come easy and without an uphill battle”
        Amen to that.
I gotta say that half of the fun in having something great is the challenge of getting that something great.
