Padlock your panties and THROW AWAY THE KEY, ladies! More Leather Tyler to follow!
I’ve been sitting on some new Tyler Lockwood-centric promo photos, which I stumbled onto here, for a couple of days.
They’re from Vampire Diaries episode Daddy Issues (S02E13).
I tried holding out until next Tuesday for the normal Tingling Trevino coverage time, but patience is a virtue, and clearly I am not virtuous.
Give me Tyler in BAMF black leather, and that is like giving crystal meth to a drug addict.
When my niece showed me her favourite picture book of the moment (a childhood favourite of my own) last night…
Hairy Maclary rocked the motherf**king house when I was a kid, and still does
… I knew it was the universe’s way of saying, “Screw waiting, dammit! Share your Werewolf Sex God theories with the world!”
You know who agrees with that sentiment?
A certain Music Sex God…
Aww, I bet that cutie read Hairy Maclary as a kid and is Team Forwood now too!
Pic is also included as penance for my waste of earlier opportunities to show just how HARD Brandon rocks plaid 😉
Consider this a companion piece to blogger pal Julie’s AWESOME speculation post about the first Vampire Diaries episode back after hiatus, The Descent.
SPOILERS ABOUND! You have been warned!
So what are we waiting for? Let’s find out…
First, let’s look at what we know for sure.
Tyler and Caroline Forbes, AKA Vampire Barbie and Werewolf Ken, sparked an unlikely friendship in light of both being Babies Who Bite (TM TWoP) or brand new supes.
Caroline showed her inner care bear during Tyler’s first long, painful experience of turning into a werewolf, forging an intense bond between the two.
Hairy McClairy is good with tongue.
You know who else I bet is?
In the promo for The Descent, Tyler lands an Ambush Kiss (TM KJewls) on a very surprised Caroline, after telling her “Whatever you need, I’m here for you”.
I won’t lie. I *EnjoyTheSilenceDance*…
… whenever I re-watch that promo and hear that line, and am a HUGE Forwood shipper, as anyone who has taken a casual glance around this blog will know.
But I am a reasonable shipper. Well, most of the time 😉
It is an entirely valid question to ask if Tyler truly wants to be with Caroline or if he is feeling needy after what he’s just been through and utterly grateful for her display of true friendship that he gets carried away.
Whatever the reason, it is a truly brave act to me.
Crossing the line to romance with someone who has been part of your friendship circle for most of your life, even if deeper connection has been quickly established, is potentially more awkward than hooking up with an unknown. This is especially true if, in the past, you have kissing the ex-girlfriend of your BFF after hooking up with his sister AND mother.
I choose to think of it as Tyler’s take-no-prisoners response to finally having time, after the impending transformation doom bearing down on him being lifted for at least a month, to process his true feelings for Caroline.
Caroline, who will also be kissed by ex-boyfriend Matt in the same episode, reacts by saying “Everyone needs to stop kissing me!” and I think you could argue that even if Tyler is already there with his feelings, Caroline may not necessarily be. She forced a break up with Matt because he is human, and therefore she is a danger to him, so there are likely unresolved feelings she has to deal with before moving on with Tyler.
Matt isn’t the only obstacle in the way of Forwood coupleage. Aside from the inherent conflict of being two different species who have an “age-old feud” (at least, according to Mason Lockwood), there is the tiny issue of Caroline’s vampire maker having tortured and killed Mason, and her having been complicit in keeping the incident a secret from those not part of the Salvatore Scooby Gang, including Tyler.
And secrets don’t stay secrets for long in Mystic Falls.
There have also been some spoilerific interviews with Vampire Diaries exec producers Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec. I’m going to put the most interesting extracts about the Tyler/werewolves/Caroline connection below.
Julie Plec interview with TV Fanatic:
Question: How many more werewolves are coming to Mystic Falls?
Answer: That I can’t say, but I will say Tyler isn’t the only one, as we’ve just met Jules. Jules was talking to someone on the phone during the previous episode, and it’s quite possible that that somebody might be showing up to town pretty soon.
Question: Overall, what can we expect when the show returns?
Answer: We’re going to come to the end of what we’re calling our werewolf chapter, which will really take that story to a really dark place and really change a lot of characters’ lives, not necessarily in a good way.
Kevin Williamson interview with Wet Paint:
Question: What’s in the future for Caroline and Tyler’s relationship? Will werewolf/vampire tensions drive them apart?
Answer: Yes, 100 percent. In the very next episode, things begin to unfold that don’t bode well for their budding relationship. Tyler starts asking questions and we’ll see that blow open. And don’t forget, there’s Matt waiting over there in the middle. So there’s a little triangle going between a human, a vampire, and a werewolf. Tyler got through his transformation, she was there for him. They sort of have this kinship now, of this curse. And now we take it to the next level and play it out. It’s very tragic.
Question: Is it a doomed relationship from the start?
Answer: Oh my god. I wish I could squeal and tell you everything that will happen. But over the next three episodes, Julie and I were watching and — it gets tragic.
Feeling a bit nervous, fellow Forwood fangirls? Lupining Tyler shots make everything better…
Now, let’s check out the official CW synopsis for Daddy Issues (S02E13).
CHOOSING SIDES — Johnathan Gilbert’s (guest star David Anders) return to Mystic Falls comes as an unhappy surprise to Elena (Nina Dobrev), Jenna (Sara Canning) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder). Caroline (Candice Accola) lets Stefan (Paul Wesley) know about her conversation with Tyler (Michael Trevino), and Stefan does his best to reach out to a confused and conflicted Tyler. Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) comforts Bonnie (Katerina Graham) after her disturbing conversation with Jonas (guest star Randy Goodwin)… When Jules (guest star Michaela McManus) takes a hostage, the situation quickly escalates into a violent confrontation. Zach Roerig and Matt Davis also star. Joshua Butler directed the episode written by Kevin Williamson & Julie Plec (##213).
Thanks Spoiler TV for the head’s up!
One thing about Tyler is that he has had MAJOR Daddy Issues, not least because his father was a carrier of the werewolf gene. We found this out when he and Tyler both got a werewolf migraine from a device use to emit a noise that incapacitated supes in the season one Vampire Diaries finale.
Tyler is unlikely to have any issues though with the “Daddy” who is swooping back into Mystic Falls to stir up some trouble…
So with all this stuff in mind, let’s jump onto the promo pics and speculation aplenty!
I’m not exactly sure what is going to happen or what order the promo pictures should be in, so I’m just going to analyse them in the most logical sequence I can think of. I’m curious to know not only what you think the pictures are depicting, but whether I got the sequence right.
Let’s deal with the most important aspect of these pictures, which I assume are from the same scene… JULES’ HAND on Tyler’s knee!!
This is what I internally told her…
We all know that Tyler has a penchant for older women when he is going through an emotionally rough time, like that one time he totally hooked up with Matt’s Slutty Mom after finding out about Vicki’s death.
I suspect though that Jules is expressing concern, sadness and solidarity after their shared discovery of Mason’s death.
That then begs the question of how he will find out about the death.
I actually think Caroline will be the one to tell him about Mason’s death and the Salvatore Scooby Gang’s involvement. She would probably also fill him in about Jules being another werewolf for good measure.
What will be the trigger? Her discovery, after Tyler’s Ambush Kiss, that she does in fact have feelings for him, after having the chance to process everything.
Remember what Tyler said when referring to Matt’s blissful ignorance about all things supernatural and Caroline’s status as a kickass baby vamp, and therefore why he understands her reasons for drawing away from Matt?
Tyler: “It’s not really fair to be with someone and not really let them know who you are.”
I think that Caroline can’t bear to keep secrets from someone she has grown to care about deeply any longer. Tyler would probably have no one other than Jules to talk about the Mason incident with. His mother knows about vampires and werewolves, but he might want to protect her from the horrible truth.
Either that, or Mason’s body is discovered decomposing in his truck at random, much like Caroline accidentally discovered Vicki’s last season.
The last picture shows Jules with her arms crossed defensively, with Tyler standing back slightly, a positioning that I think shows his conflicted feelings about whether to side with her or listen to Team Vampire because of his bond with Caroline. Based on the promos, which indicate that Damon will be stalking a stubborn Jules for information about how to cure the Werewolf Rabies bite she gave his friend Rose in By The Light Of The Full Moon (S02E11), I would bet on him being the one staring her down with his pretty, pretty baby blues.
It is kind of satisfying to see someone giving Tyler a Bad Touch for once, considering how much he loves to shove people against walls.
And could Stefan get any hotter than when he is being all badass? Oh wait, he can!
Paul Wesley Fans, the world owes you!
… as the episode synopsis suggests, is concerned about his adopted baby vamp Caroline , and the wedge that has been driven between Forwood, most likely in light of the Mason torture revelation.
Tyler, with his tendency to be a dick and have anger management issues, no doubt heightened because of the discovery about his uncle’s death, probably forces Stefan to use tough love and try to get through to Tyler by getting physical with him. I don’t think anyone can argue that Tyler doesn’t understand the language of violence.
There is another possibility that comes to mind, one that links in with the whole doppelganger ancient Mayan curse thingy.
The blood of Stefan’s girlfriend Elena, as she is crazy vamp Katherine’s human doppelganger, is one ingredient required to break an ancient curse that, if broken by werewolves, will allow them to transform at will, and, if broken by vampires, will remove the effects of the sun on them.
Now, the painful transformation process is a very real deterrent for the wolves wanting this power, but there have been hints of an age-old feud with vampires, so maybe they are determined to even the playing field by any means necessary.
Who knows? Werewolves have apparently been hunted close to extinction by vamps because their bite is fatal to bloodsuckers. Our source on this matter is Katherine, who is hardly a reliable narrator and potentially an inaccurate one. It is possible that there is a whole horde of werewolves living in secret to avoid vamps going after them, and are sick of having to hide their true nature from the supe community.
Katherine would probably love to know that there are even more doggies out there to play with!
Julie Plec has hinted at us finding out about werewolves who are raised knowing about their condition and encouraged to be proud of it (though I frankly worry about families who, by association, be encouraging their child to murder someone in order to trigger the curse).
What if a Lockwood ancestor organised with the witch who put a spell on the moonstone to make it so that only a Lockwood werewolf could break the curse? This wouldn’t necessarily be as a sacrifice (though the blood of a werewolf and vampire are needed as well as the doppelganager’s), but as part of the spell, so that the Lockwoods have immense power.
Stefan could be confronting Tyler with the fact that he is the key factor in the tug-of-war between the werewolves and vampires on this issue, and maybe even demanding that he side with Team Vampire because of his friend connections.
With everything else that is happening, Tyler might not be ready to hear that he is the linchpin in a battle between warring supes and/or might be conflicted about joining Team Vampire and determined to be on Team Wolf or Team I’m Staying Out Of This. As a result, Stefan might be driven to use badass force to drive his point home.
Or, I guess it can be a little bit of PapaStefan AND Badass Stefan at work.
Now, I’m going to unleash the pics that you are all really waiting for… those with Leather Tyler in them!
Let us all take a moment to reflect on the second picture, of a Salvatoreo Sandwich dipped in a HAWT werewolf milk wishbone.
Ok, now we can continue.
The interesting thing is, you can read this pic sequence in two ways.
First, the Salvatoreo Sandwich looks like an image of solidarity, and maybe the pic of Stefan grasping Tyler’s arm is his attempt to hold Tyler back from doing something stupid. If the hostage that Jules has taken, as mentioned in the CW synopsis, is Caroline, maybe he is upset about seeing her in danger.
I would be curious to know how Jules managed to vamp-nap Caroline if this is the case, given even baby vamps are stronger than werewolves. Admittedly, though, humans like Alaric have been able to bring down vamps, and a seasoned werewolf like Jules probably has learned a few tricks about protecting herself from them and attacking them successfully. Well-placed vervain also works on most vamps.
But there is quite a different way of reading the pic series. The Salvatores might have were-napped Tyler because of my Lockwood ancestor theory, and be forcing him to stand between them. Stefan’s hand on Tyler’s arm might be a possessive gesture, as he prepares to make a trade to have a hostage ELENA delivered back to him safe and sound, one of the few things that would make him give Tyler up.
Alternatively, Stefan might have been keeping Tyler in his care to protect him from being used by his fellow werewolves to break the curse, but still reluctantly given him up because of an Elena hostage situation being used as a bargaining chip.
What do you think about these promo photos?
All I can say is, Thank GOD, we are running along the home stretch of hiatus, you guys!
