SPOILER WHORE Got Forwood – Tyler & Caroline Speculation – Daddy Issues – The Vampire Diaries

For those of us who love to “Catch VD”, we can be promiscuous in more ways than one.

During the liveblog I did with Julie from TV Recappers Anonymous and Amy from Imaginary Men, Julie happily admitted that she is a fangirl slut when it comes to wanting to mack on all the main male leads of this show, even though any casual readers of her blog will know that her heart really belongs to Damon.

Fangirl promiscuity can also manifest itself in other ways: spoiler whore-ism.

Each week I’ll be doing a spoiler whore edition of Got Forwood, recaps that focus on the connection between Caroline and Tyler AKA my Mother Ship for The Vampire Diaries. As a full-on Delena fan, I do not say this lightly 😉

This week I’ll be breaking down the promo for upcoming episode Daddy Issues, and trying to piece that together with what we already know, so we can speculate away together about what the hell is going to happen.

So if you are virtuous and like to be unspoiled, come back later and re-read this post so that you can bestow lavish praise on me for my almost scarily prophetic insights into what is going to happen or point you finger and laugh at how very, very wrong I was.

Let’s get into it!

Daddy Issues (S02E13) official episode description:

Elena, Damon, and Jenna are surprised when Johnathan Gilbert returns to Mystic Falls. Caroline tells Stefan about her conversation with Tyler, and Stefan tries to help a confused Tyler. Jeremy consoles Bonnie after her upsetting conversation with Jonas. A violent situation breaks out after When Jules takes a hostage.

The full, extended promo:

We’ve seen some fairly shocking, disturbing scenarios on The Vampire Diaries so far.

Damon’s torture and murder of werewolf Mason Lockwood…

Elijah’s “anything you can do, I can do better” response to Damon’s favourite kill technique…

Source

Most horrifying of all… Salvatores wearing shirts.

But the sight of Caroline Forbes, who was a victim so much of the time as a human and whose transformation into a powerful, self-assured vampire baby vamp has been my favourite arc this season, locked up in a cage in the promo for Daddy Issues is the one that has provoked the strongest reaction in me.

The fact that the promo implies Tyler Lockwood is the one who has locked her up is even more upsetting.

Source

The promo team for The Vampire Diaries is notorious for screwing around with our minds and feelings. Stefan/Katherine cave sex is something that springs immediately to mind.

Sometimes they’ll include quotes in a promo, only to leave them out of the actual episode itself (although I consider this content to be canon), like Tyler’s “Anything you need, I’m here for you” comment to Caroline.

Sometimes I get the feeling that they sit around at parties and, while doing shots, think, “Now how can we get the fandom all worked up this time?”

There are three key things to remember when we look at this promo.

One is that Tyler has consistently shown trust issues every step of the way with Caroline, constantly questioning her reason for helping him, until the morning after his first transformation.

The second is that, in this case, his trust issues are actually justified, because Caroline and the rest of the Salvatore Scooby Gang were complicit in the murder and cover up of his uncle Mason, even though Damon was the one who actually did the deed. Jules spilled the beans about Caroline lying about no other vamps being in town. Time will tell when Tyler finds out the rest of what Caroline has been hiding from him.

Incidentally, here is a song that sums up my current feelings for Jules exactly:

C’mon, she is like ParisHilton!Wolf and you know it!

The third is that for weeks, Vampire Diaries Executive Producers have been saying that the Forwood story is going to take a “tragic” turn and becomes “dark”. So, my unicorn icons will be languishing in the dark for a while, I think. Here is their last hurrah for a while…

Tyler’s outward persona has always been highly masculine and built on his reputation as a jock at the top of the social hierarchy. I mean, his football jersey has a giant number 1 on it, for Christ’s sake.

Caroline-tyler-descent

For the Sweet Valley High fans out there, it is the equivalent of school jerk Bruce Patman having Porsche license plates that say 1bruce1. Seeing Tyler vulnerable the morning after his transformation and wearing his heart on his sleeve in terms of his feelings for Caroline was doubly jolting when seeing him wear this jersey, which symbolises the Tyler we have known up until recently.

In the promo, Tyler throws Caroline up against a car using his new werewolf super speed, and tells her in a ragged tone, “I trusted you!”

Source

Note the past tense on “trusted”.

I wonder if the physical violence is partly a way for him to attempt to re-establish the alpha male dominance that is like a protective shield for him.

Trusting Caroline was a big deal for Tyler. Most people in his life have let him down one time or another. For example, he befriended Jeremy despite mutual antipathy last season, only to have Jeremy drop him despite knowing he had become a werewolf.

When Tyler finds out about the significance of the moonstone to breaking the vampire/werewolf curse, which Jeremy repeatedly tried to convince him to give him, he’ll feel even more betrayed. His father, who died in the season one finale, was emotionally distant and when he did interact with Tyler, did emotionally abusive things like trying to force him to fight another kid just to prove a point.

Here is an excerpt from an interview Trevino had with TV Squad recently:

Q: Caroline has obviously been keeping a lot of secrets from Tyler . How is he going to react when he discovers that she’s been lying to him? Will he be able to trust her again?

A: Well, he’s not going to be very happy at all. At all. That’s a big episode there because that trust, that bond that they had, it’s just out the window once he finds out that there are indeed other vampires. Because he trusts her and he thought that they were best friends. So, at that point, you kind of see him start getting closer with Jules, who’s going to be in town for a bit.

In many ways Caroline has been the emotionally dominant one in the partnership and Tyler opened himself up completely to her in a way he hadn’t with anyone else, so I’m not surprised that he turns to physical violence to show he isn’t going to be so blindly vulnerable to her anymore. Plus, Tyler has rage issues and hasn’t been above trying to menace Caroline using his strength even when he thought she was still human, so it is completely in character for him to fly off the handle, because of the lies that Jules has uncovered. The question though is whether Jules has only proven to him at this point the existence of other vampires in Mystic Falls, which would cause him to question everything Caroline has said anyway, or if he knows the truth about how Mason died.

I actually think that Caroline tells him the truth about Mason, not Jules, in the aftermath of the car-slamming. This next screen grab is of Stefan asking Caroline, “What if Tyler retaliates?”

It sounds to me like Papa Stefan is rebuking her for telling Tyler information that could cause him to flip out completely, and Mason’s death is really the only thing that would do this. However, if Jules is the one who shows Tyler Mason’s corpse, then it is possible he could assume that CAROLINE was the person who did the actual deed, since she has told him she killed someone when she first turned, and he might think her help in the lead up to and during his transformation was out of guilt for killing his family member.

Either way, a promo photo for Daddy Issues shows Stefan shoving Tyler up against a wall. So even though the episode description includes the line that “Stefan tries to reach out to a conflicted and confused Tyler”, they clearly aren’t at the level of exchanging secret handshakes yet.

Carolinefacesmash

The next sequence shows Caroline, whose hand is bloodied (ironic symbolism for the blood on her hands because of her role in Mason’s death), being thrown up against a wall and then being kidnapped and trapped in a cage. If the shoving around earlier by Tyler, who it is clearly she has deep feeling for, didn’t leave any emotional as well as physical scars, being trapped in a cage certainly will. In a heart rending voice, Caroline asks, “Why are you doing this to me?” and we have a cut to an intense-looking Tyler (i.e. Tyler in his normal state; he always looks intense!) staring at her through the cage’s bars.

Carolinecageddaddyissues

Tyler-daddy-issues-promo

Now, the promo is implying that he may have played a role in her capture, but it is entirely possible that he is shocked and distraught to find her in this situation, and these are definitely emotions that call for intensity if no others do. The other thing is, we have seen Caroline play victim before, when she was tricking Katherine into entering a bewitched room at the masquerade ball. Plus, the werewolves might not know yet about the significance of the sunscreen (TM KJewls) rings, one of which she owns.

Although I would love it if Caroline were tricking the wolves into capturing her as part of a long con that would make Sawyer proud, I think that her capture is genuine. She is vulnerable because of her feelings of guilt over lying to Tyler and upset over the damage that has been done to their relationship. Kev and Julie have stated that she will be close to death, sooner rather than later. Moreover, although even baby vamps can pwn wolves, as shown when Caroline kicked Mason’s ass, with the element of surprise and some well-place vervain, anything is possible. Heck, even Caroline herself knocked Damon down as a baby vamp when she took him by surprise, and relative age translates to differences in power levels for vamps in this mythology. Here is hoping that stills from Daddy Issues of Tyler with the Salvatores…

… indicate that if he DID have any initial role in entrapping Caroline, that he eventually comes to his senses and helps save her. Or, alternatively, if he truly was shocked to discover her locked up in a cage, maybe he is the one who alerts the Salvatores to the need to rescue her. If Tyler does help save, I wonder if HE will do something unforgivable in the meantime that means his relationship with Caroline is destroyed regardless, at least until he does something that proves he is worthy of redemption.

Carolinevampsoutdaddyissuespromo

Finally, we get a random shot of Caroline totally vamping out, so I bet she isn’t in the victim role for too long in this episode.

If Tyler doesn’t help in the Caroline rescue effort and bands together with the other werewolves, it is entirely possible that the wolves who escape the carnage will skip town until the next full moon, and Tyler could return with them. I am hoping against hope this doesn’t happen, because I NEED MY TREVINOGASMS, DAMMIT! But that would be one hell of a return, that is for sure.

Fear not, fellow Forwood fans, there is some hope on the horizon.

Trevino gave this answer to another question in the TV Squad interview:

Q: We know that there’s going to be a “violent confrontation” with the werewolves in episode 13 and some fallout in episode 14. Can you tell us which side Tyler is going to be on in the showdown?

A: [Laughs] That’s interesting because he’s learning so much right now that he’s probably just right in the middle. He’s right in the middle of it all and just figuring out who’s lying, who’s telling the truth, who means well, who doesn’t. That’s where he’s at, which is weird because at the end of the day he is a werewolf. He has transformed. But, he’s right in the middle because his relationship with Caroline is really close.

Obviously there will be less trust and added tension between Caroline and Tyler with the revelation of her lies, but I think that their bond established during his transformation will remain intact. I do think, however, that he won’t be down with the rest of the Salvatore Scooby Gang, and that he will be conflicted because of not knowing whether his loyalties lie with Caroline, and perhaps even Team Vamp BECAUSE of Caroline, or if they lie with the werewolves but he can’t break that connection Caroline in spite of himself.

Sides will have to be chosen, and this episode will no doubt give us some indication of where Tyler will be drawing the line in the sand.

But let’s leave on a couple of light notes.

You know, I didn’t think I could get any more excited about this week’s TVD installment than I already was? Then you go and write this amazing post. Suddenly, my excitement is dialed up from 10 to 100!

Honestly, if Julie and Kevin ever need an extra writer on their staff to cope with the Forwood aspects of TVD, I would nominate you, in a heartbeat! I can’t think of a writer in the WORLD, save perhaps, Julie and Kevin, themselves, who has a greater understanding of these two characters, and can more eloquently describe their relationship, and their individual strengths, weaknesses and motivations.

Clearly, you are eligible for a PHD in Forwood-ology. 🙂 (As you can see, I’m still jockeying to get TVD to become a college course SOMEWHERE in this world. Hey, it worked for Lost, Mad Men, and Buffy!)

I think you are right in suggesting that Tyler did not explicitly take part in Caroline’s capture, but rather learns of it later, and feels conflicted, as to how he should handle it.

I’ll be the first to admit that watching Caroline cry, “Why are you doing this to me?” in that extended promo, as Tyler looked on with a mixture of horror, angst, and range, literally brought a tear to my eye. Damn, you TVD marketing department and your two-hankie promos! 🙂

(Mind you, during Rose’s Death Scene, my eyes stayed COMPLETELY dry. I may have even cheered a little *blushes* I’m not quite sure what the discrepancy says about me as a human being. Nothing good, I suspect. ;))

Like you, I’m a bit saddened about the barriers that are about to be built between Caroline’s and Tyler’s budding relationship. And yet, in a way, I am heartened by it too. Because I see some SERIOUS makeup sex in this couple’s future. And NO ONE does hot, emotional, makeup sex like an Alpha Male Athletic Werewolf, and a passionate and EXTREMELY ENERGETIC Baby Vamp. 🙂

Heck, maybe we will even get a nice hefty dose of Hate Sex, while we wait? All fingers crossed! See, apparently, I am not only a Fangbanging Fangirl Slut and a Spoiler Whore, but a TVD-Porn Freak, as well. 🙂 Who knew?

(By the way, thanks SO much for purchasing our Team Forwood Shirts, and for giving us that AWESOME plug on your site. You are SERIOUSLY the best blogger pal, EVER! And if you ever need me to return the favor in ANY way, please don’t hesitate to ask! ;)).

Hey, speaking of TVD tonight, I think this episode is supposed to mark the debut of Stephen Amell a.k.a. Twitter’s Call Me Pancakes as Werewolf Brady. Being the Fangirl Slut I am, I, of course, already want to mack with him . . .

    • Spidey Sense

Us Forwood fans are in for so much of a treat tonight! I am SO psyched about this episode. Come to think about it, everything between Caroline and Tyler, aside from the initial surprise about their friendship, has progressed in a fairly predictable way… they’ve grown closer, shared secrets, and gone beyond being strictly platonic.

I expected all these things once they started hanging out, and given the context of their shared experience of both being baby supes. But from here on out, I have NO IDEA what is going to happen. Will Tyler betray Caroline? Save her? Do something terrible and then partially redemptive? Just how sexy will Trevino look in a black leather jacket? All these questions and more excite me very much 😉

I swear to God, you, Amy, Jesse and I should write an unofficial guide to The Vampire Diaries. Could you imagine how much fun we would have?! I’d have the Forwood angle all covered, Jesse could do Stelena and you and Amy would kick butt with the Delena aspects. Thanks so much for the kind words! It means a lot because I really do care for this pairing, and hope I can do their many different dynamics justice each week. I have a feeling that this week’s recap is going to be enormous!

I tend to agree with you about Tyler discovering Caroline’s capture and feeling conflicted about what he should do. Hopefully, he will come to his senses. If he doesn’t, he had better make up for it later down the track. Also, no Trevino torso porn will be on this blog for a week, as promised, if he doesn’t help our sweet Care Bear baby vamp. Yes, I’m very protective of Caroline! I’m definitely emotionally invested enough to get all choked up from that promo like you too, although I’m Miss Ice Eyes, so goodness knows if my tear ducts will actually finally work during this episode. I’ve gotten sniffly from this show, but not quite out and out bawling. That may change soon… By the way, I like you will be ROCKING THE HOUSE when Jules dies a slow, painful death (I’m hoping!), so your cheer at Rose’s beautiful send-off (in Damon’s arms; what a way to go!), means that there is nothing wrong with you at all 😉

I’m hoping that Tyler has an antipathy for vampires in general, but is still be drawn into that world reluctantly because of Caroline. God, I am hoping for Hate Sex, Sweet Sex, and any other Sex in between. Speaking of which, the first time we have baby were, baby vamp sex, people, I plan to post a picture of me wearing one of my Forwood shirts on this blog. Possibly doing a triple herky ;). The design of the shirts is so cool, so thanks for creating it! I’m holding out hope for a sweater version to emerge in the future…

Can’t wait for the fresh meat of Brady! But if he likes Jules, I just may have to hate loving to scope him out 😉

  • André

Gosh, I so hope these two will not end up as a couple. I still think a best-firend relationship would be better.
I wonder with this whole curse topic, whether it will really be so good for the werewolves to break it, because it was stated earlier, that they “plagued the country side” (a bit weird since because it all happened pre-columbian), however, considered how painful the transformation is, who would undergo such transformation willingly? If it gets easier after a while, what would be the motivating factor to start with it and only then it would be rewarding if the pain level decreases dramatically? Of course I am not the writers but considered the hitherto presented information I ask myself whether the trasnformation was actually voluntary in pre-curse times but rather that their rabid wolf-sides could break out at anytime. If not it was either far faaaarrrrr less painful (no hints whatsoever) or the people who underwent such transformations willingly where of the sort you rather not want to meet.
And I may have missed it, but when did Jeremy “drop him”? Or is my english so bad?

    • Spidey Sense

I’m loving having such a different perspective on the Got Forwood posts! You’ll be the one who will keep all of us shippers in line 😉

I think you raise an interesting point about whether werewolves would really want to break the curse. The same thought has occurred to me, actually. It doesn’t seem like a very good deal for the wolves, does it? If the curse made transforming something they could do at will AND pain free, that would really even the stakes between vamps and weres. I guess the other way of looking at it is that they want to break the curse if only to prevent the vamps from breaking it. So that even if they don’t gain much in the process, they at least don’t have to deal with even more invulnerable creatures.

After the Plan B episode aired, The One Where Mason Was Tortured, Jyler were never seen together again, as far as I can recall. I still can’t decide if I want Jeremy and Tyler to befriend one another again or go through a bitchy, snarky phase with one another for a while. Knowing their volatile personalities, we’ll probably get a combo of both!

By the way, your English is great 😉
