So, in the immortal words of Pacey Witter, is it any wonder that I have fallen 100 per cent ass backwards in love with Tyler Lockwood (Michael Trevino) of The Vampire Diaries?

Speaking of Pacey, remember that one time when Joey had to “find herself” and broke up with Dawson to do so? *excuse*cough*excuse*

Personally, I think she just wanted to find GQMF Pacey

Dawson took it badly, to put it mildly. I mean, he was even inspired to sing the drunken Dawson Leery Blues.

Tyler has left Mystic Falls with Forwood Unicorn Killer Jules (GRR! ARGH!) for a journey of self-discovery just like our girl Joey.

I’m not really sure what he will be up to on this road trip.

Trevino!Ass is fair game for intense scrutiny since Michael is not above blatantly checking out hot asses himself 😉

Only one thing is certain: Tyler will be forever in our hearts, minds, and ovaries while he is gone.

But why sing the Dawson Leery Blues when we can scratch our Tyler itch with a kickass mixtape of his character arc over the Vampire Diaries series so far instead?

Mixtape Track #1 – Gold Guns Girl – Metric

Lyrics:

All the gold
And the guns
In the world
Couldn’t get you off

All the gold
And the guns
And the girls
Couldn’t get you off

All the boys
All the choices
In the world

I remember when you were gambling to win
Everybody else said better luck next time
I don’t wanna bend like the bad girls bend
I just wanna be your friend
Is it ever gonna be enough (x7)

All the lace
And the skin
In the shop
Couldn’t get you off

All the toys
And the tools
In the box
Couldn’t get you off

All the noise
All the voices
Never stop

I remember when we were gambling to win
Everybody else said better luck next time
I don’t wanna bend like the bad girls bend
I just wanna be your friend
While you’re giving me a hard time

I remember when we were gambling to win
Everybody else said…

Is it ever gonna be enough (x7)

More and more, more and more…

Tyler Connection:

All the gold

And the guns

Kids, avoid a life of crime (unless you are Michael Trevino’s clone, in which case you will be looking f**king hot while doing so)

And the girls

Couldn’t get you off

All the boys

All the choices

In the world

All the toys

And the tools

In the box

Couldn’t get you off

(Couldn’t resist inserting a little Jyler, Bad Cop Tyler, and moonstone tackiness into this post ;))

This song perfectly captures Tyler’s outward persona in early season one. At first, we really only saw Tyler as others superficially saw him. Tyler was presented as the typical bad boy who happily exploited all the advantages afforded to him by his family’s political connections in Mystic Falls and wealth (“gold”), as well as a stereotypical jock with a one track mind for meaningless sex (“girls”) to the point that he forced himself on his best friend’s sister. I mean, his football jersey even has an enormous number “1” emblazoned across it!

Tyler-descent-halfsmile

It was obviously important to Tyler to keep this carefully constructed image and his position at the top of the social hiearchy intact. For example, when Stefan Salvatore arrived in Mystic Falls like God’s vampiric gift to football in Friday Night Bites (S01E03)…

…Tyler tried to protect his team from this “invasion” by ganging up on the outsider and hurting him during a scrimmage. Yet we see that behind his macho bravado that he has deep-rooted adequacy issues.

When Stefan vastly outperformed Tyler on the football field and Coach Tanner, pre-Damon appetiser days, screamed at Tyler, “Mr Lockwood, is there anything you’re good at? Cause it isn’t history and it sure as hell isn’t defending the ball!” the expression on Tyler’s face spoke volumes about how he already felt like he fell way short of others’ expectations of him. We later find out this is particularly true of Tyler’s emotionally abusive father, Mayor Lockwood.

Gold Guns Girls is about the pursuit of meaningless distractions never quite making you feel complete or happy (“Couldn’t get you off”).

We have gotten subtle clues throughout the Vampire Diaries series that Tyler isn’t really satisfied with the shallow existence he practically clung to in early season one.

He treated his girlfriend/f**k buddy Vicki like trash out in the open and didn’t seem to take her too seriously initially because of her reputation as the school tramp. Later it became clear his feelings for her had actually deepened a little (he says to Jeremy Gilbert, a rival for Vicki’s affections, “would it make any difference if I told you I actually liked her?”), and I would even argue that he was probably quite a different person in private with Vicki than in public, and maybe even tender.

Source

In fact, I got the impression Vicki would have chosen Tyler over Jeremy if he hadn’t kept shutting her out in public. Ultimately though, he compromised self-respect and what he wanted for himself by falling into line with the lofty social expectations his friends and family had of him.

When he watched wistfully as Vicki stormed off from a party after breaking up with him, it clearly had become less of a case of him being a complete and utter jerk to her as someone who was desperate to maintain his rep. Vicki is often described as a character who had low self-esteem, but I would also say that Tyler’s was low too if he cared more about keeping the respect of “important” people than following his heart.

As I’ll describe in more detail later, we finally see Tyler stripped completely of any ego-driven decisions in Crying Wolf (S02E16), just before he leaves Mystic Falls. It makes the person who he’ll return as all the more intriguing.

Mixtape Track #2 – Where’s Your Head At? – Basement Jaxx

Lyrics:

Where’s your head at, at, at, at?
Where’s your head at?
Where’s your head at?
Where’s your head at?

Where’s your head at?
Where’s your head at?
Where’s your head at?

Where’s your head at?
Where’s your head at?
Where’s your head at?

Where’s your head at?
Where’s your head at?
Where’s your head at?

Where’s your head at
Don’t let the walls cave in on you
We can live on, live on without you

You get what you give that much is true
Don’t let the walls cave in on you
You turn the world away from you

You have now found yourself trapped in the incomprehensible maze

Where’s your head at?
Where’s your head at?
Where’s your head at?

Where’s your head at?
Where’s your head at?
Where’s your head at?

Where’s your head at, you’ll know how to be
Where’s your head at, you don’t make it easy on yourself
Where’s your head at, what you give is what you get, is what you get

Tyler Connection:

All of the Vampire Diaries guys have defining characteristics.

Like Damon being an exceptional dancer.

Damon dancing go one

Or Stefan having a hero hairdo that must swoop in to save Elena at every possible interval, when she is not busy doing BAMF things like stabbing herself to trick an Original vamp.

(Elena, I heart you lately!)

Key Tyler traits? Hyper-masculine aggression and rage issues. Most frequently seen in the giving and receiving of Bad Touches that make me jump with joy.

Jeremy-Tyler-Wall-Bad-Touch

Source

I am dark and twisty, I know 😉

One of the most interesting things about Tyler is that, unlike a lot of other characters, he is genuinely out of control.

I mean, Damon is a magnificent bastard of a sociopath, but there is usually a method to his madness, like his desire to open the tomb to be reunited with Katherine, as he thought would happen, back in season one. Or his belief that all werewolves in Mystic Falls should be eliminated purely out of pre-emptive self-preservation, to the point he stuck a silver knife in the gut of a werewolf who asked him that very same day to just let bygones be bygones.

Tyler is an entirely different breed of jackass to Damon.

He almost seems to suffer rage blackouts ALA Summer from The OC, and a lot of the time seems caught off-guard by his own rage. The song title’s question of “Where’s your head at?” pretty much sums this up perfectly.

As he told his uncle Mason, who we later discovered was a werewolf, in Bad Moon Rising (S02E03) during a shirtless heart-to-heart (hey, I pick up the important details!):

Tyler: “It’s like I go blind with rage.”

Mason: “Is there a pattern? Like once a month? Only at night?”

Tyler: “All I know is I lose myself, you know. For that time I become something else. I hate it.”

Or as the song puts it: “You have now found yourself trapped in the incomprehensible maze.”

When he is in his right mind, Tyler generally backs away from physical confrontations, and quite frankly is often pretty damn cowardly. Like when Jeremy confronted Tyler about not visiting Vicki in hospital after she was attacked by what they thought was a wild animal, Jeremy wanted to throw down, but Tyler tried to avoid coming to physical blows (“This is your last warning. Walk away Gilbert”).

Contrast this with his out-of-control brawling with Matt after Matt sees Tyler hooking up with his Slutty Mom at Vicki’s funeral (Oh yeah, Vicki totally dies later on. I wasn’t really that sad because I hoped Jyler would happen).

Matt is his best friend and was totally within his rights to be upset with this scenario, but soon he was wearing a Tyler choke hold necklace.

Personally, I would prefer Tyler adorning other parts of my body, but either way you can’t deny his ornamental value 😉

It is only when Alaric Saltzman pulled Tyler off of Matt that Tyler came back to himself. Alaric asked, “What was that? Huh?” and Tyler seemed to have no idea.

The only time Tyler punches someone when he is in full control of himself is when they show him pity, as this strikes at his fear of not being deserving of respect. When Jeremy got a glimpse of Tyler’s rough home life in The Turning Point (S01E10), he asked, “Is it always like this for you?” Tyler responded with a Jyler-y kiss of his fist. Jeremy’s “What’s your problem, man?” received an emotional “I don’t know” from Tyler, said under his breath and to himself.

So, all things considered, I get the impression that for Tyler his aggression can be an out-of-body experience almost at times, where he watches himself do mean, petty, nasty, spiteful things, and is left wondering what the hell is possessing him to be like this.

Tyler has a wild streak, and his inability to control this part of this nature is obviously something he hates and is scared of.

Mixtape Track #3 – Family Tree – Matthew West

Lyrics:

You didn’t ask for this
Nobody ever would
Caught in the middle of this dysfunction
It’s your sad reality
It’s your messed up family tree
And all you’re left with all these questions

Are you gonna be like your father was and his father was?
Do you have to carry what they’ve handed down?

No, this is not your legacy
This is not your destiny
Yesterday does not define you
No, this is not your legacy
This is not your meant to be
I can break the chains that bind you

I have a dream for you
It’s better than where you’ve been
It’s bigger than your imagination
You’re gonna find real love
And you’re gonna hold your kids
You’ll change the course of generations

No, this is not your legacy
This is not your destiny
Yesterday does not define you
No, this is not your legacy
This is not your meant to be
I can break the chains that bind you

Cause you’re my child
You’re my chosen
You are loved
You are loved

And I will restore
All that was broken
You are loved
You are loved

And just like the seasons change
Winter into spring
You’re bringing new life to your family tree now
Yes you are
You are

No, this will be your legacy
This will be your destiny
Yesterday did not define you
No, this will be your legacy
This will be your meant to be
I can break the chains that bind you

And just like the seasons change
Winter into spring
You’re bringing new life to your family tree now

Tyler Connection:

Is Tyler the way he is because of the werewolf gene, first latent and then active, that is a part of his nature?

Or is he a byproduct of his family environment?

Source

You didn’t ask for this
Nobody ever would
Caught in the middle of this dysfunction
It’s your sad reality
It’s your messed up family tree
And all you’re left with all these questions

We are yet to see whether werewolfism can be transmitted via bites to human beings on The Vampire Diaries. What we do know is that certain families carry the werewolf gene, which is activated only if that person kills someone, whether through murder or pure accident.

Hints were dropped throughout season one that the Lockwoods carry the were gene in their “family tree”.

Some were subtle.

Alaric’s awesome put down to Mayor Lockwood in The Turning Point (S01E10) that he is a “full grown alpha male douchebag” was a clever reference to wolf packs (there are alphas, betas etc). Alaric’s comment was his way of shutting down a sick situation where Mayor Lockwood was trying to force Jeremy and Tyler to give one another Bad Touches until they worked out their differences once and for all. The Mayor’s bullying hinted at heightened animal instincts that you could expect in a latent wolf.

Source

Jeremy and Tyler’s reactions to what Alaric said were hilarious!

Also, the fact that the vampire headache-inducing device used to disable these supes in the season one finale also affected Tyler and his father was a nice touch.

Source

Other hints about the upcoming werewolf storyline were pretty anvilicious.

You could definitely argue that Tyler’s behaviour can be explained away by his werewolf side. For instance, his intense rivalry with Jeremy over Vicki can at least partially be seen as animalistic territorialism.

Yet as the song suggests:

No, this is not your legacy
This is not your destiny
Yesterday does not define you
No, this is not your legacy
This is not your meant to be

Tyler’s uncle Mason unwittingly triggered the werewolf curse by his evil vamp girlfriend Katherine compelling someone to fight him until Mason was forced to kill them.

The interesting thing about Mason is that he seemed for the most part a pretty calm zen-like surfer dude. Maybe his life’s pursuit became searching for the perfect wave because he was so desperate to calm the heck down. And, once provoked by Damon, he went after the Salvatores full force. But we never once saw him exhibit the blind rage of Tyler and the extreme rage issues of Mayor Lockwood.

So I think Tyler’s bad attitude was at least in part a result of his upbringing in a household run by a person like his father. Of course, if nurture has played an influential role in the person he is, as much as his inherent nature that he can’t control, that means that it is up to Tyler to not let his actions “yesterday” define him.

Once Tyler discovered the secret behind the werewolf gene trigger, he became like this Final Destination death force that would inevitably kill someone.

When he accidentally killed Thing Two, he was faced with the intensely slow, painful process of transforming into a werewolf. Through her sweet support, baby vamp Caroline showed that she had the potential to be the one thing that could break the chains that bind Tyler.

Forwood Unicorn-stomping hijinx ensued that put the brakes on this development, as I’ll talk about more later. Only time will tell if Caroline can help him break free completely of the chains of his family tree.

One thing I am confident about? One of his conversations iwth Mason, after a near-Tyler!kill-miss, will be a defining one:

Tyler: “I almost killed a girl today.”

Mason: “What?”

Tyler: “It was an accident and I was being stupid. She’s ok though, but there I was, you know just for a moment, for a split second I hoped that she died. Look, whatever this is inside me, I don’t want any part of it. I don’t ever want to feel that way again. I won’t. I can’t.”

The song asks: “Are you gonna be like your father was and his father was? Do you have to carry what they’ve handed down?”

Clearly Tyler wants to resist this, but ignoring the situation and giving an obviously valuable moonstone to Mason (which he had kept hidden up until then) in a bid to wash his hands of the whole situation isn’t a solution. He has to confront what being a werewolf really means to overcome the dark parts of his nature.

Mixtape Track #4 – I’m Shakin’ – Rooney

Lyrics:

I’ve forgotten what it feels like to feel normal
To be normal
I’ve forgotten what food tastes like
The way it tastes right
The taste buds taste right
I wake up in so much spit and sweat, it is not normal
What is normal?

I go to bed
When I wake up
After cleaning all
All the spit and sweat

I’m sha sha shakin, sha shakin’
I’m sha sha shakin, I’m shakin’ now

I tossed and turned all night
’cause I was looking for an ending
This was so because I watched all day
The neverending story with atrayu

The next day came but not a beam of light
Because the blinds were shut
Sha sha sha shut so tight

I fell out of bed laced with spit and sweat
It made me very cold
It made me
Sha sha shakin’, sha shakin’
I’m sah sha shakin’, I’m shakin’ now

I’m supposed to feel better
And I’m supposed to stop shakin’
I’m sha sha shakin’, sha shakin’
I’m sha sha shakin’, I’m shakin’ now

Tyler Connection:

In my Tyler/Caroline mixtape and Got Forwood recaps, I go into a lot of depth about the connection baby vamp Care forges with baby were Tyler, despite being from two species pitted against one another as enemies. I can’t really do the pair justice by trying to summarise the incredible complexities of their relationship here. Instead, I’m mainly just gonna focus on what their relationship has revealed about Tyler’s character growth.

Tyler killed Thing Two accidentally at the masquerade ball in season two, which Caroline witnesses. Baby vamp Care knew a thing or two about weres when this happened, but at this point Tyler didn’t know she was a vampire.

He got Werewolf PMS after triggering the curse…

Source

Is it that time of the month again?

… and should’ve figured that Caroline would realise something was up when his eyes turned amber with gold flecks.

It wasn’t until she gives the revealing information that she knew he would heal supernaturally fast from a wound compelled, knife-wielding Thing Two gave him, though, that he realised Care had the 411 on him.

This led to a bunch of “Tyler, I’m Audi” moments…

 Vampire Diaries : Lonely Monsters

Yes, I watched Clueless last weekend and am going on a reference bender. Deal with it 😉

… where he tries to find out what she knows while she attempts to dodge. When Caroline eventually confessed what she is, the pair bonded because of their shared experience of being brand new supes.

This song lyric applied to both of them: “I’ve forgotten what it feels like to feel normal, To be normal.”

Caroline, however, having had more time than Tyler to adjust to her new condition, became his rock. She was there for him when he discovers what is pretty much the snuff film of his uncle Mason’s first transformation, and a terrifying glimpse into his future. And she was there for him during the transformation itself, refusing to leave his side until the last possible moment.

The Vampire Diaries : Werewolves Do It In Chains

Watching Tyler gradually open up to Caroline was incredible to watch, and as rare as seeing a unicorn trot into your field of vision.

Rainbow-unicorn

There had been hints of Tyler’s sensitivity all along, but more importantly his desire to quash these, or in the very least hide them. From the way his father raised him, as manifest in Tyler’s dominant personality (at least on the outside), he had clearly learned to think that vulnerability isn’t something he should be showing. He also obviously found it incredibly difficult to trust others.

Caroline helped him because she is a fixer and generous friend by nature, but Tyler questioned her motivations the whole time they were growing closer, only trusting her fully for a fleeting moment the morning after his first transformation.

Having him admit to Caroline things like “I’m scared” about his impending transformation (or as the song puts it: “I’m sha sha shakin, sha shakin’, I’m sha sha shakin, I’m shakin’ now”), and reveal to her that he actually does have a good understanding of human relationships  like in the “I get it” speech he gives about her break up with the human Matt Donovan ( “it’s not fair to be with someone if you can’t be honest with them”), was a quantum leap forward for him.

As it turned out, Caroline HAD been withholding information from him, both about the death his uncle Mason had at the hands of Team Salvatore and the existence of other vampires in town. She did so to protect him, but Tyler didn’t realise this until it was too late.

When new werewolf in town Jules revealed Caroline’s deception, Tyler’s form of confrontation was like his way of trying to prove to himself and her that he wouldn’t allow himself to be vulnerable again.

He raggedly tolf her “I trusted you” before pushing her against her car with supernatural, violent werewolf force, arguably a subconscious way of trying to reassert the alpha male dominance he had used as a shield previously and dropped only in her presence.

Mixtape Track #5 – Prisoner of Society – Living End

Lyrics:

(one, two) (one, two)
Well we don’t need no one to tell us what to do
Oh yes we’re on our own
And theres nothing you can do
So we don’t need no one like you
To tell us what to do

We don’t refer to the past
When showing what we’ve done
Our generation gap
Means the war is never won
The past is in your head
THE FUTURE’S IN OUR HANDS!

Cos I’m a brat
And I know everything
And I talk back
Cos I’m not listening
To anything you say

And if you count to 3 (one, two, three)
You’ll see it’s no emergency
You’ll see I’m not the enemy
Just a Prisoner of Society

Well we don’t need no one to tell us what to do
Oh yes we’re on our own
And there’s nothing you can do
So we don’t need no one like you
To tell us what to do

Cos I’m a brat
And I know everything
And I talk back
Cos I’m not listening
To anything you say

And if you count to 3 (one, two, three)
You’ll see it’s no emergency
You’ll see I’m not the enemy
Just a Prisoner of Society

(GO!)

Well we don’t need no one to tell us what to do
Oh yes we’re on our own
And theres nothing you can do
So we don’t need no one like you
To tell us what to do

We don’t refer to the past
When showing what we’ve done
Our generation gap
Means the war is never won
So we don’t need no one like you
To tell us what to do

Cos I’m a brat
And I know everything
And I talk back
Cos I’m not listening
To anything you say

And if you count to 3 (one, two, three)
You’ll see it’s no emergency
You’ll see I’m not the enemy
Just a Prisoner of Society

Society, Society
Society, Society
Society!

Tyler Connection:

Just FYI, I saw this song live in Australia as a teen and it KICKED ASS!

In part, Prisoner of Society is about how the lines between right and wrong often get blurred, and there is a tendency for innocent people to get caught in the middle of situations where what is right and what is wrong isn’t clear.

Tyler, and Caroline, for that matter, are both pawns in a larger werewolf/vamp race to break a curse that will the other species eternally screwed. (if werewolves break the curse, they can control when they transform or not transform at all; if vamps do they won’t be affected by the sun).

Tyler, when he discovered Caroline’s deception and the truth about the vamp brothers Salvatore and the role they played in his uncle’s death in Daddy Issues (S02E13), acted like the rage-y, confused teenager that he is.

Caroline asked Stefan to try to talk reason with Tyler about why they lied to him before he did something stupid.

We don’t refer to the past
When showing what we’ve done
Our generation gap
Means the war is never won
The past is in your head
THE FUTURE’S IN OUR HANDS!

This verse is actually a pretty cool fit for the Stefan/Tyler dynamic in Daddy Issues, when you think about it.

Stefan, having lived for 145 years, is separated by a “generation gap” or two from Tyler, aside from the whole vamp vs wolf thing. A vampire is living history, so it is pretty apt to say “The past is in your head” about Stefan. In addition to the differences in their species, it is worth considering the impact that Stefan and Damon coming from an entirely different era, and therefore thought space, has on their interactions with the mortal werewolves. It’ll be interesting to see if the curse is actually broken, so that the vamp/were war will be “won” finally, at least in one respect.

Well we don’t need no one to tell us what to do
Oh yes we’re on our own
And there’s nothing you can do
So we don’t need no one like you
To tell us what to do

Cos I’m a brat
And I know everything
And I talk back
Cos I’m not listening
To anything you say

Stefan breaks into Tyler’s house to try and talk him down, but Tyler isn’t too receptive. Prisoner of Society is a song where the narrator imitate a typical teen to sarcastically show how older people (Stefan) view younger people (Tyler) – that if they are talking back, they must not be listening and are just being total brats.

I know it is wrong to find this incredibly hot, but I do 😉

I can’t help but see this scene from Tyler’s perspective though. Stefan claims to want to just get along with Tyler. Yet he is patronising and clearly carries an anti-werewolf bias, resorting to physical violence when Tyler doesn’t immediately respond the way he wants (“Without a full moon, you’re no match for me”). All Tyler knows for sure about Stefan is that he was part of the group responsible for his uncle’s murder, so you can hardly blame him for being a brat in this situation.

The sad thing?

You’ll see I’m not the enemy; Just a Prisoner of Society

This is true of both Stefan and Tyler, in terms of their warring species.

Tyler was right when he said to Jules that vamps and werewolves being natural enemies sounded “stupid”, and I can’t help but feel this war only exists because both sides mindlessly perpetuate it.

Crystal Ball Track – I Hear The Bells – Mike Doughty

Lyrics:

I hear the bells
Down in the canyon, it’s
Snow in New York
Some blue December, I’m
Gone to the moon
Without you, girl, and I’m
Calling to you
Throughout the world and well I can
Hear the bells are
Ringing joyful and triumphant and

I hear the bells
They are like emeralds, and
Glints in the night
Commas and ampersands
Your moony face
So inaccessible
Your inner mind
So inexpressible

I’m seeking girls
In sales and marketing
Let’s go make out
Up in the balcony
Your business dress
So businesslike and I’m
Tossing the blouse
Over a chairback and

You snooze, you lose
Well I have snost and lost
I’m pushing through
I’ll disregard the cost
I hear the bells
So fascinating and
I’ll slug it out
I’m sick of waiting

Tyler Connection:

Tyler is now at a crossroads, and we’ll find out whether his actions “yesterday” will define him, or if he will be able to rise above everything that has happened.

He realised too late that regardless of everyone else’s intentions, Caroline had his best interests at heart.

This realisation came after freezing during a critical moment during a wolf/vamp standoff, possibly out of fear, not knowing who to trust, being unable to act quickly in his first life or death scenario, or a combination of all of these. Whatever the reason, he basically stood idly by while she was moments away from death. The song describes this in an awesome way: “You snooze, you lose; Well I have snost and lost”.

Caroline, the person who kept him together when his body was breaking apart, felt completely betrayed and ended her friendship with Tyler, literally slamming a door in his face.

Previously she was open with him; now the lyric “your moony face, so inaccessible”, is a perfect descriptor of how she has hardened herself to him.

In a moment that was completely free of any ego, Tyler delivered a knee-weakening speech to Matt (Care’s ex but someone she still has lack of relationship closure with), after Matt assumed their growing closeness and then passionate arguments meant that TC were hooking up.

Actually, he was kinda right for a while there!

Here is the speech again, in case you haven’t read it enough times 😉

Tyler’s speech to Matt marked his anti-hero exit from Mystic Falls with Jules, who really and truly just cannot stay the f**k away from my Forwood unicorn. No doubt he will be back, but what condition he returns in is unknown.

I remain positive until the end though.

Some blue December, I’m
Gone to the moon
Without you, girl, and I’m
Calling to you
Throughout the world and well I can
Hear the bells are
Ringing joyful and triumphant

I’m gonna say that he will come back stronger and surer to the girl he kinda fell for after having “gone to the moon” (kinda fitting for a wolf, no?).

And even though it will be a long, angsty road, the “bells” will be “ringing joyful and triumphant”.

Roughly translated?

Mega hot baby vamp on baby were action will one day happen.

And again a very interesting post from our Spiderqueen. 🙂

I really wish you would also analyze the other characters from the show, I would really look forward to that and I think I can guess who the two most likely candidates would be.

However, I think you’re again a bit too optimistic for Forwood, but I guess that is excusable since chances seem really bad for Jyler. 😉

““full grown alpha male douchebag” was a clever reference to wolf packs (there are alphas, betas etc). Alaric’s comment was his way of shutting down a sick situation where Mayor Lockwood was trying to force Jeremy and Tyler to give one another Bad Touches until they worked out their differences once and for all. The Mayor’s bullying hinted at heightened animal instincts that you could expect in a latent wolf.”

Don’t get me wrong your reasoning is valid; however the basis (when applied to actual wolves) is wrong. The writers probably reasoned exactly the same way you did so it makes sense in that way. BUT this depiction of wolves is pretty wrong and the writers probably didn’t know better. First the alpha-beta-omega situation is more typical for wolves in captivity where wolves cannot leave the pack if they want to. In the wilderness (according to newest research [including David Mech]) the typical “wolf-pack” consists of a breeding pair, their current offspring and the offspring of the previous year. The young usually leave at least at two years of age with variations (the range I know is from 7 months to 5 years of age). Anything close to the alpha-beta-omega situation would occur when the area is “full”, meaning the wolves can’t travel to vacant territory for a long distance. However even then it’s far more complicated than most people think (e.g. in Yellowstone roughly every fourth pack has more than one breeding female). In addition bullying has nothing to do with animal instincts, the majority of interactions in wolf-“packs” and dog-“packs” who grew by themselves (mark: by themselves, not some group of dogs that was put together by humans, such a thing is nearly always a basis for serious conflicts) are of a positive nature and usually bullies aren’t alphas (or better leaders) for long, in such cases it is not unusual that the other members of the pack form an alliance and kill the bully. In addition the position of the pack leader consists of far more duties than rights and he/she (yes she, often females are leaders too, quite often) often literally has to keep everything in order. I forgive you for stating the above mentioned stuff, because this, well, nonsense, is still pretty strong, just like that dogs like bones above meat or that dingos and wolves do not bark.

    Now to the actual topic:

With Tyler it is really the question of nature vs. nurture. Based on his uncle Mason being a werewolf doesn’t necessarily equal jackass since he seemed to have been genuinely popular or at least liked. The other so far presented werewolves don’t really count since Brady and the Slaterwolf seemed both pretty sociopathic and Jules comes along mainly as a manipulator. However Mason also stated that “the curse of being a Lockwood” didn’t pass him, simply that he learned to handle it. We don’t know how he and his (much older) brother grew up but based on their behavior it might have been quite different, so Tyler’s behavior is not really a surprise considering his father (as you mentioned).

Now what is I think another valid point of you is what I call the “dichotomy” of Tyler. You talked about him seeing himself from the outside. While this could also be simply him, in his case that would really speak for a separate personality that resides inside him. Since not much has been presented about werewolves so far, we have to deal with what we have. Tyler was pretty much a wreck after his first transformation, there wasn’t much presented of Mason, however Jules seemed quite calm, however Tyler was seemingly fully conscious when he had reverted to human form while Jules was seemingly unconscious. However based on her actions afterwards it looks as though she also couldn’t remember what had happened, although her reaction at discovering the camping site were more “now I have to clean” and not “what have I done”. However her talk with Damon later might suggest at least a measure of knowledge if not control, then again the Salvatores where only a few meters away when Stefan mentioned Rose so Jules might have heard it and simply did the math. Again not much info but we have to deal with what we have.
So far it seems, mainly based on Tyler, that the werewolf is a separate entity which is however never truly gone, based on his eyes and rage. Seemingly the werewolf tries to break free and is only capable of doing so under the full moon (just a theory on my accord).
Since you analyzed the subtle hints from Season 1 I think you might have missed one from Season 2: the Hulk reference. Maybe that was something similar too. As so far only the werewolves stated that after the curse broken they could change freely. But whether this is true is debatable since no other source yet confirmed it.
But if the Hulk reference has meaning than maybe the transformation is not as voluntarily as believed (evidenced by what you call werewolf PMS). So maybe anger would trigger the transformation, maybe.
Or maybe I just confused cause and effect, maybe the anger/rage is an effect of the werewolf trying to come out and not the cause of the werewolf coming out. After all the Hulk (no matter which incarnation) is still a sentient being (ranging from fully in control and very literate to angry child or sociopath) whose main danger comes from its strength while the werewolf so far is presented as a killing machine that kills simply for killing. Sure, actual wolves also may kill more than they need to (surplus killing) but that is triggered because their killing is disturbed or the prey practically runs in front of them again and again. Considered the speed of the werewolf this seems unlikely so the logical conclusion is that they mainly kill for killings sake and not for food (a bit to scientific but it would fit). This feature of the werewolf would speak of non-voluntary shift and also as for werewolves being manufactured as a weapon.
In addition: Tyler’s statement of a part of him wanting the girl to die, something that was in no way hinted so before or afterwards. As you stated there were anger management issues but as presented by your Damon comparison there is a clear difference to an actual desire to kill someone. However this part of him spoken of might suggest a certain level of sentience and awareness of the werewolf even while the human is dominant (respectively curse not triggered yet), because when out, the werewolf (as presented by Mason and Jules) is no simply killing machine but obviously has survival instincts and can “plan” to a certain degree. Which might also suggest that the werewolf knows what is necessary to “create” it, whether by instinct or some unknown source is not really important for this issue, and therefore it of course would try to break out and Tyler’s rage might really be the werewolf trying to break free in times when Tyler’s own defenses are down and his mind correlates more with that of the werewolf, e.g. anger. Whether the fact that his strongest moments of rage were so far directed at Jeremy, Matt and Caroline has any more meaning to it than what was depicted so far I don’t know but it would be interesting. Just a theory but if the werewolf knows what is needed to create it, this might include a certain understanding of what obstacles would need to be removed on the way and I think all three persons might fit the criteria of such an “obstacle”.

Being anointed Spiderqueen pretty much made my day 😉

I always love reading your comments – so amazingly detailed and thoughtful!

Funnily enough, I have a massive, in-depth character mixtape for Damon coming up next. I think I’ll need a week’s breather after this one, but I’ve had this one in the works for a while. Is the other candidate you think I would have in mind Stefan, by any chance?

I actually have done loads of mixtapes for other characters and couple combinations, like Stefan/Katherine, Damon/Katherine, Elena/Stefan, Elena/Damon, a mixtape about Damon’s general hotness etc etc. So be sure to check out the mixtapes tag for that! Heck, I even did one for Jyler, which will help you understand the inspiration behind the term Bad Touch ;). I would be extremely happy if Jyler happened despite my Forwood proclivities; I think there is amazing chemistry and backstory between Jeremy and Tyler.

Forwood are my OTP, and I obviously have a soft spot for Michael Trevino, so I admit that will influence most of my Matt, Caroline, Tyler-centric posts. I am much more balanced when it comes to the main triangle though. I consider myself a Delena shipper, but have a weakness for Stelena cuteness.

Another post theme I think would be interesting – analysis of the platonic relationships, particularly the one shared by the Brothers Salvatore.

I really loved your breakdown of the interrelationships between different wolves in packs. I think I am going to take some of this information and analyse which category Jules, Mason, Tyler etc actually fit into; alpha, beta or omega. Although the exec producers of the Vampire Diaries relied on typical wolf stereotypes for Tyler, they were careful to give the remaining wolves a diversity of personality types. Sometimes this can be subsumed in the presentation of the pack mentality in popular culture. Whatever its flaws, TVD really does create distinctive characters, even when they are only on the show for a few episodes.

The way I see it, werewolves represent how we have an inner nature that means we are predisposed to be a particular way, and it is up to us to decide whether to embrace or fight aspects of this nature. I also think that Tyler in the throes of a transformation is a really good metaphor for us not being able to control the way others perceive us. We can try to hide behind a certain façade, like Tyler did with his outward jock persona in season one, but eventually people are able to see glimpses of the real person within. Sometimes, this is a positive thing, like with Matt’s ability to see something worth befriending in Tyler.

I think there is a degree of self-awareness amongst the wolves when they transform. Tyler was able to distract Mason when he had turned during the first full moon of season two. Jules “marked” Damon in human form, and went after him and Rose as a wolf; this can’t be a coincidence. I would imagine this varies from wolf to wolf, depending on factors like age, number of times they have transitioned, personal willpower and so on. I like your description of the dichotomy of Tyler. The wolf is within him all the time, as it was when only locked within his genes, but is his wolf side something that should be considered separate to his human side, or are they inextricably intertwined? I tend to agree with you that, in this mythology at least, the werewolf is a separate entity or split personality that Tyler has to manage.

The Hulk is actually quite a tragic figure, although this is often overlooked because of his excessive greenness and hulkiness when mad ;). So even though the Hulk line was played for dark humour, I think it is a great point you make that it also describes the involuntary nature of werewolf transformations in this mythology.

Damon, if he was being conceived as a werewolf, would be the scheming, planning beta type (going by the general characteristics linked with betas in popular culture). Tyler has some beta characteristics. For example, they are fiercely loyal. Even though he can be a dick to Matt, he has shown on more than one occasion that he is willing to go to extreme lengths to protect Matt and Matt’s position in the social hierarchy relative to everyone else. Using the football team example again, Tyler’s douchebaggery towards Stefan was at least partly a way to punish someone who was seemingly undermining Matt; in terms of stealing his girlfriend, team etc. In many ways, Tyler doesn’t necessarily fit the traditional pop culture model for alpha; it is more a protective shell than a reality. This is what started getting me really interested in the character.

I found your idea that the werewolf is an inner part of Tyler that tries to break free when his defenses are down really interesting. It’s a shame that his exploration of what it truly means to be a werewolf is occurring largely off screen. Here is hoping that when Tyler returns we get a fuller explanation for the divide between human and wolf.

      • André

Spiderqueen was fitting in my eyes, because princess sounds to girly (and to powerless) for me and you are obviously a woman and not a girl anymore.

Well actually I thought you would make a mixtape of Caroline or Jeremy due to you belonging to Forwood and Jyler fandom. Damon and Stefan didn’t really occur to me, but maybe because there is already so much revealed about them on show. Well that and I don’t think them attractive, they are not ugly but something is missing in them. Jeremy, Tyler and Matt are more my type than the Salvatores, even Matt has something that attracts me.

Are those mixtapes you talk about unpublished ones or the older entries on this site? Because if the latter I might have to reread them.

If you incorporate the wolf-stereotypes it might be good to mention that this alpha-beta-omega usually only occurs in captivity. In fact “omegas” are very rare in the wilderness since it’s the wolves with the lowest or highest rank (parents excluded) that leave the nest first. However, this brought me to a thought:
This stereotypical behavior most likely occurs in captivity where wolves cannot leave the others and even those that simply don’t get along may not be separated. This leads to high levels of stress and a brutal “pecking order” might be the only way to maintain some level of stability.
Now in TVD the situation of the werewolves might be similar (like in Underworld). We don’t know how many vampires actually know of werewolves and so the next stuff is based on pure speculation. Now let’s assume that a werewolf can’t leave because he would be in mortal danger. That is one point, another one would be the transformation and the seemingly uncontrollable behavior of the werewolf. They can’t just let their other selves run loose because the body count of deaths would be soon so high that even the dummest would start a “witch-hunt” and the life of the werewolf would even lack the most basic stability. When several cooperate this would provide better defenses as well as the establishment of safety measures for the time of the full moon (after all, despite Jules loyalty talk there is no hint so far that their werewolf-selves might not turn upon each other just as well, at least it would fit the majority of werewolf descriptions). In this way the werewolves of TVD would be forced to stay with each other (are therefore captives) and even very incompatible characters would have no chance of truly avoiding each other. Therefore an alpha-beta-omega situation with a strict pecking order might be inevitable.
Of course they could also get along by a certain hate-culture that is based on demonizing the other (vampires) and romanticizing oneself to provide a unifying identity.

That they have distinct characters in the show is the reason why I hate it that they kill them so fast, I like to see or at least read more, but its nearly always Stefan-Elena-Damon. 😦

Maybe Tyler represents what you talk about regarding inner nature. But I am not so sure about the werewolf, because so far it is not really a good deal embracing this part of oneself, you can admit it to be better able to fight it but embracing it so far would mean to become a monster (which is maybe what happened to Brady – becoming a “monster” to fight/while fighting “monsters”).

I don’t think Jules had much self-awareness in wolf form, not that the wolf didn’t had a certain amount of sentience, since she actually attacked Jules not Damon, but I think it’s best to wait and see what future episodes will present regarding information.

I think it’s hard to tell on which level Tyler and the Werewolf are separated/connected. They are obviously not connected in the way that they are truly one being, but rather two separate beings. However this still allows for the werewolf to so to say peek through the curtains and see certain things. Whether that means sharing certain memories I don’t know and I don’t want to speculate too much until given more info.

Your “beta”-analyzing of Tyler is interesting. It could explain why also connected seemingly rapidly to Jeremy. While Jeremy is portrayed as an outsider, this status seems to have made him capable of making decisions on his own which is definitely a trait of a leader (albeit he is still quite inexperienced of course). Tyler might be someone that needs direction and therefore bonds with people who can give him that without treating him like trash. This might also be based on a need for protection, especially from himself, because he fears that there might be the day he is in need of someone else to stop him, sadly this is hampered by his “inability” to express his emotions properly.

        On your last point:
Maybe it will come out in book form. But it will probably be on screen but whether to a satisfying degree… I hope so. I really wish they would bring out books concerning supporting cast, but so far its only the main three, a shame really, especially since the show also concentrates on them so muc.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for including one of my FAVORITE SONGS from one of my FAVORITE MOMENTS of one of my FAVORITE SHOWS in your Tyler Mixtape. Of course, I am talking about Mike Daughtery’s “I Hear the Bells.” And, of course, I’m talking about Logan’s and Veronica’s Epic Conversation, during their Anti-Prom on Veronica Mars Season 2. It’s amazing how much, even in terms of their respective relationship ups and downs, and shared musical references, Logan and Veronica parallel Tyler and Caroline!

When Logan made his undying and totally truthful (yet admittedly drunken) speech to Veronica, as “I Hear the Bells” played in the background, they too were at a crossroads in their relationship, much like Tyler and Caroline are now. Both men have changed irrevocably for the better, as a result of the support of strong plucky blonde females. And, as a result, both men are willing to admit their feelings to the women they loved in a moment of pure honesty and impulse. In fact, these moments were so pure, and so impulsive, that the more circumspect ladies didn’t immediately know how to respond to them. Annnnnnnnd then both guys screwed up AGAIN, by betraying the women they loved, BIG TIME!

But the lyrics of the song, as you so eloquently explained them, carry within them, not just angst, remorse, and impatience, but the “bells” of hope and promise for a future relationship — one that, if not always functional, will at least always be exciting, genuine and passionate. 🙂

I also love your choice to use “I’m Shakin” by Rooney to represent the pain, discomfort, uncertainty, and embarrassment Tyler felt, while undergoing his first wolf transformation. I was first introduced to Rooney in general, and this song, specifically, when it was featured on an episode of The O.C. For me, this song always represented the painful awkwardness of adolescence and puberty . . . which, when you really think about it, is what werewolf transformations are a metaphor for anyway. Very clever! 🙂

    • André

I’m not quite sure if this particular werewolf transformation is really a metaphor for that. It seems more like a personality disorder.

    • Spidey Sense

As evidence in your totally awesome post comparing Caroline/Tyler and Veronica/Logan, there are so many similarities to their awesome character arcs and relationship journeys that it is no surprise a signature song for one of these pairings seemed perfect for the other. I just love the “moony face” reference for TC considering the whole werewolf angle, because it reflected what a negative presence a seemingly innocent white orb in the sky has had in Tyler’s life (first causing his transformation; second, in this song, describing his rift with the girl he is in love with). No wonder it was Lupin’s Boggart 😉

You know, I hadn’t even thought of the parallel between Tyler’s screw ups post-kiss/Caroline freak out and Logan’s misguided drunken hook-up after being rejected by Veronica. Logan and Tyler are impulsive people when it comes to their feelings (the LoVe Ambush Kiss TM Kjewls comes to mind!), whereas the fatal flaw for Caroline and Veronica is overanalysing everything. Caroline and Veronica both pursue relationships that seem perfect on paper but don’t really work in reality (Matt and Duncan are interchangeable in my mind), but fight the more complicated relationships that work better in terms of chemistry but seem to go against the cookie cutter model of what they expect a perfect relationship to be. Interestingly, Veronica clinging on to Duncan, and Caroline doing the same with Matt, represents their unwillingness to let go of their former life (Veronica’s teen dream fantasy life; Caroline’s humanity), even when it becomes obvious that they have changed so much that returning to this exact place is no longer possible. Maybe this is why everyone suddenly loves Caroline; she pretty much IS Veronica now, and V kicked ass!

I hope that TC mirrors LV in another way… they reconcile after the Bad Boy is there for the Good Girl at a crucial moment, cancelling out all of their earlier wrongs.

Ahh, The OC, how I miss you. (well, season one, anyway ;)) Well, I have been joking about Tyler’s werewolf PMS, so the puberty metaphor is pretty much perfect. Thank God we just had to handle a few zits. I have a low pain threshold, so having my arm bones snap backwards would not have been good. Did you ever get growing pains? I’m tallish, and used to get these SO badly… I can relate to Tyler at least a little!

  • Gen

Brava!! Amazing post is amazing. I laughed, swooned and teared up a bit seeing T/C being perfect before falling apart. They really have done me in those two.

You and I have the same understanding of Tyler. I told you before that moment when Tyler watches Vicki walk away was the moment I began to like Tyler. We finally got to see that Tyler wasn’t a one dimensional bully that he had issues all his own.

I made the same comparisons with Mason and Tyler as far as their rage issues. Tyler’s seemed to stem from his upbringing like you said. He had a judging mother and an equally judging father who was also verbally and physically abusive towards him. Now that his father is dead, his sole parent has become neglectful of her only child and son. I hope to see a shift in their relationship when Tyler does return. I know we don’t see to many of our characters have relationships with their parents (Caroline and Liz’s was brief), but I hope Tyler and his mother can have some moments.

I aslo like how you mentioned how Tyler was probably different with Vicki when they were alone. I can see that as well. Tyler probably always had a softer and vulnerable side to him, but refused to show it so not to be seen weak. I do believe he was probably very gentle with Vicki when they were alone.

Amazing post babe. I applaud the serious work, thought and time you must have put into this one. You have outdone yourself with this one. 🙂

P.S. Look at Trevino checking out the Laker Girls lol. Love him. If I’m not mistaken he went to that game with his Dad right? He was tweeting about it yesterday. 🙂

    • Spidey Sense

Aww! The post wouldn’t have been half as amazing with your GIFs and pictures to add to it.
I’m right there with you. TC have taken my hold of my heart in a crazy way, and I really do care about whether these crazy kids can work their s**t out.
Trevino is such a good actor, that I sometimes wonder if he added elements of vulnerability to the Tyler character in looks and gestures, long before the script presented him in a more sympathetic light.

I think the Vampire Diaries writers made a smart choice in making Mason the antithesis of the stereotypical alpha male wolf. It would have been too easier for the writers to blame Tyler’s entire disposition on his inner wolf. Agency of characters and their free will, regardless of their supernatural natures, is a really important theme to me. I don’t think that the Salvatores should be given a free pass for morality just because they are vampires, anymore than Tyler should for being a werewolf.

You know, Tyler’s relationship with his mother has been really stop start. There have been some moments between them that indicate her deep care for him (the “it’s natural to feel abandones; I just don’t want you to feel alone” speech, for instance). Yet clearly she is alienated from Tyler. I mean, he didn’t even think up a decent cover story for running away. Maybe he underestimated just how hysterical she would be about losing him. I hope that when Tyler comes back, they explore his relationship with his mother much more deeply.

Tyler’s relationship with Vicki showed how different his private and public selves are. I mean, look at the company he keeps. He seems to respond well to softies like Matt, rather than surrounding himself with other alpha males. On the one hand, maybe being opposites with Matt balances out their friendship nicely. On the other hand, like you’ve suggested, Matt obviously sees something in Tyler that contradicts his outward jocky persona, or he wouldn’t have remained best friends with him all these years, and indeed forgiven him for so many transgressions (usually with the women in his own family ;)). Matt might have seen the impact of Tyler’s home life on him, and have deep empathy for what he is going through. Maybe he recognises the soft hidden underneath all of Tyler’s prickly outer layers. I find the Matt/Tyler dynamic really interesting, and I hope we get more moments between them when Tyler comes back.

Speaking of tearing up, have you read the latest Zach Roerig/Candice Accola joint interview on Zap2It? I seriously need some fangirl comfort food after that one! These writers, they just keep messing with us so!

      • Gen

Aww thank you! I’m going to have to take a hiatus myself with all the gif making and edits. My poor delicate heart can’t handle it lol.

I come from a family that dotes so much affection on the boys of the family. So I always find it so weird that a mother who has only one child who happens to a boy so alienated from him. She’s never really reached out to him, other than the moment you stated. Then again she tried comforting him after Richard died and he reacted violently. I just hope they can at least show us the moment between him and her when he does return.

I like to think Matt knew all along how Richard was with Tyler. Matt said, “Do you remember how your dad used to smack you around?” when he was trying to pick a fight with Tyler during “Masquerade.” So maybe Matt did know how hard it was for Tyler growing up in the household that he did. They seem really close and both Donovans are the only ones to call Tyler Ty. Which is so cute lol. Matt and Tyler really do have a really interesting dynamic to them. Being complete opposites and yet they managed to maintain a friendship that has lasted their entire lives. That’s saying something.

Yes, I read it. I’m going to be choking on all the Caratt tomorrow lol. I love Matt, but I really do think his and Caroline’s time has come and gone. I’m interested to see if they at least discuss Tyler. Fangirl comfort food consisted of raiding my sisters fundraiser candy box and leaving her IOUs lol.

        • Spidey Sense

Oh, no, you have to keep giving me my Trevino fix! I’m like a junkie with your Tumblr now 😉

The weird thing about Tyler and his mother is that in some scenes, if they weren’t related, I would almost say that the producers were playing it for unresolved sexual tension. The air was crackling between them during their little moment before heading into the masquerade party. I was thinking the whole time, “God, do the producers really have no clue how this is coming across?!)

Zack Roerig played the jerk who provokes you against your better judgment in Masquerade to perfection. I haven’t watched all of the FNL seasons yet, but I can see why people were raving about his performance as a total jackass in that series.

It seems obvious now, but I had actually never noticed that the little term of endearment “Ty” was only used by Matt and Vicki.

Well, get your toothpicks ready for tomorrow night’s episode. You know, for picking all that Caratt out of your teeth with. I intend to eat brownies while watching in rebellion to having unwanted vegies forced down my throat 😉

          • Gen

My creative juices need to get pumping again. Creativity isn’t really required when making simple gifs. I might have to try something new. *Shrugs*

I haven’t seen FNL either, but another actor I was very much in love with was up for the role Zach landed. I hear he was a total douche and I’ve never seen Zach in anything but TVD. I hear a lot of good things about FNL though. It’s on my list of shows to watch/finish watching like Veronica Mars and Lost lol.

I just don’t want to hate Matt, but M/C is irking me and the episode hasn’t even aired yet lol.

            • Spidey Sense

Hehe! M/C irk me more than a fictional couple should, I will readily admit that. One of my friends deliberately dangled a carrot in front of my face when I was at her house the other day to annoy me 😉

Ohh, who was the other actor up for the role?

Friday Night Lights is awesome, and I bet you would GIF the hell out of Tim Riggins once introduced to him…

      • André

Don’t worry too much, the actors themselves don’t know where the story will go. And if you can’t have Forwood, maybe Caroline will be happy and after all it wasn’t that Forwood was in anyone mind at the beginning season 2 was it? So who knows what might still be in store for us.

        • Spidey Sense

You know, the writers were actually tossing around the possibility of Tyler/Caroline in season one. I’m glad they didn’t though, because human!Tyler and human!Caroline would have been a shallow relationship like Jonnie.

Just as long as Caroline and Tyler are both alive and angsty in one another’s directions or interact in some way, whether platonic, romantic or as reluctant allies, I will be happy 😉

          • André

You sound a bit like an addict to me 😉

Anyway, you don’t seem to be the only one who thaught that Taroline!human would have been shallow. Read the same in some fanfic.
