Accio Tyler/Caroline spoilers! (thanks Charlotte for the tip, as always, bb!)
Zap2It’s Carina recently posted an article containing spoilery stills for season three of The Vampire Diaries, including some squee-inducing pictures of Vampire Barbie and Teen Wolf.
Let’s discuss!
So, Forwood maven 12_12_12 noted that Matt is like Caroline’s Locket!Horcrux – a device that sucks the life out of our girl by playing on her insecurities, like the Horcrux Ron wears in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows that causes him to be the worst version of himself… until he fights back and ultimately defeats the side of him that forever feels like he is in the shadow of his best friend and brothers.
Looks like Caroline has finally tossed away her Locket!Horcrux.
We’ve heard reports that Caroline’s chest monster will erupt when she least expects it after seeing Tyler dance with Urges Girl, his date for Elena’s birthday, who I’m specc’ing he’s taking because he doubts she’ll ever care for him the way he does her, and is trying to move on and just focus on being her friend.

Matt has come inevitably sniffing around once Caroline’s attentions have shifted away from him again (his MO, as seen when Caroline was fixated on Tyler’s wellbeing in the lead up to his first transformation). Matty, I do believe that is the look of a boy who realises the girl no longer wants to be his pat of butter (winks at Price Peterson fans ;)). The Vampire Diaries exec producers asked the rhetorical question for season three about whether Matt would forever walk away from Caroline (in a nutshell capturing their relationship dynamic, because it should be phrased as “Could Caroline ever forgive him for his gross mistreatment of her?”). Looks like we have our not-so-rhetorical answer. Pleas God, please God, let Not Now Dana, renowned Matt/Caroline cock blocker make a cameo appearance here. It would be her finest hour!
I wonder what will kick off Matt’s unpleasant encounter with Caroline in this episode. Maybe he’ll react jealously to Caroline’s heart obviously belonging to Tyler now, say something disparaging about Tyler that causes her to flare up in Tyler’s defense, or say it’s obvious there is something going on between T/C and he bets that Caroline lied when she told him nothing was going on… all that really counts for me is Caroline’s reaction.
I’m hoping for her righteous blades of equality to cut right through him as she tells him to GTFO of her life, kind of like a Reverse Expelliarmus spell.
Followed, of course, by her confronting Tyler when she feels all these feeeeeelllllllllllings…
… and then them exploding out of the friends zone with some naked action.
The girlies in the Tyler/Caroline fan forum thread have come up with some great spec about how the TC mini confrontation might go down. My favourite is the idea that Caroline might compel Urges Girl to stay away from Tyler, and he picks up on the fact that she has done this and with genuine hurt asks Caroline why she did this… leaving her to fumble through reasons and when he leaves finally come to the realisation herself. It would be interesting to me if their conflict is driven by their natures, such as their unique abilities (like vampires being able to compel and werewolves not being able to).
Squee! Are you as excited as I am for season three? So much drama, romance and action is coming our way, you guys!

I am very curious about the confrontation between Tyler and Caroline. I wonder if he sees her arguing with Matt and comes to her defenses and she makes a comment about Urges Girl and he gets upset/confused because obviously up until this point Caroline has only wanted friendship and has made that abundantly clear, and he may think that she just doesn’t want him to be happy.
I do like the compel theory because Caroline is SO awesome with her vamp abilities that we sometimes forget she is a vamp.
I think Tyler is not doing anything intentionally and he’s just trying to move on. I mean, must be difficult being in love with your current BFF and you know they don’t feel the same way.
But of course, Caroline will be confronted with these feelings and she will come to the conclusion that she wants and needs to be with Tyler. And then the sex!
I am very interested and excited for where this season will go. I can’t wait to see it! It’s getting very difficult. I can’t wait to liveblog and fangirl with you!!!

Liveblogging and fangirling with you will be as amazing as our OTP is going to be in season three! I’m even going to run a little Spidey competition for the most imaginative use of a hashtag – still just sorting out the prize.
Price Peterson’s recaps are hilarious on every level, but I am particularly fond of how he finds new ways to riff on the Mr Mashed Potatoes moniker he anointed Matt with 😉 Price is SUCH a Tyler/Caroline shipper, but he is also fair in his judgment with the characters. I mean, he called Tyler on his hesitation, and Caroline on her karaoke (sorry romantics but UGH!).
Roerig is cute and all, but Trevino is smoking hot. How anyone could choose Matt over Tyler is beyond me, especially since Matt doesn’t really inhabit the Golden Boy role when it comes to Caroline, presumably what attracted her to him in the first place after her experiences with Damon. I just would have gone from being dumped by Matt to taking advantage of Naked Tyler in a heartbeat, whereas Caroline has taken a whole summer to get to that place 😉
OMG, if Matt is seen as “letting” Tyler have Caroline, it would just contradict Caroline’s arc. I really, really want her encounter with him to be her asserting that he doesn’t own her, and that she deserves way better than him. LOL about someone on FF saying “she’s no longer going to be his door-MATT”!

It is beyond satisfying having Matt be given a taste of what it is like to be The Placeholder for once. I would love her to tell him off or walk off in a completely lovestruck daze, not even noticing him there !
I can’t wait for things like compulsion and other supernatural issues to be discussed by this couple or shown to have an impact on their dynamics. As others have pointed out, things like alpha Tyler being physically weaker than his bb Care is just awesome. I also hope the hot/cold dichotomy plays out a little between them.

Hey Jo, here’s another little tidbit that you’ll appreciate as a fellow hardcore Forwood shipper… my friend 12_12_12, who writes an amazing livejournal, pointed out that Caroline is colour coordinating party decorations in shades of red. Can you imagine Tyler trying to express a semi-romantic sentiment? Just the thought gives me delicious shivers!
Remember how he was so stilted in his delivery of his reasons for leaving: “I thought you didn’t deserve someone like me in your life.” Emotion laden words do NOT come naturally to this boy. So, I am hanging out for every Tyler-y syllable when he gets romantic with Caroline, and sighing with pleasure that my bb girl is finally going to get the consideration she deserves.

Great post Cherie, like always. I’ve been discussing with Gen and I don’t really know if I’m right or if I’m making any sense, but here’s what I think will go down in season 3. Tyler will want to repress any feelings he has for Care because we all know what happened when he tried to put them into action. So he finds the girl he takes to Elena’s party and he keeps being a good friend to Caroline. But little does he know that my bb Care, feels for him and that she’s jealous when she sees him with the girl. At the party, he’ll probable be putting the moves on the stand in and Caroline observes from the sideline while being creeped on by Matt, who obviously wants her back. But Matt has lost the Care-Bear train by now and of course he’ll realize that his best friend has taken his place in Caroline’s heart.
Now, I don’t know if the sex scene is a dream or if it will go down in ep 1 but I do know that TC will get together. And I think their mothers will find out and of course will keep them away from each other. Now will be the time when Matt comes again in the picture and if what we know about Caroline is correct, she will take him back because A. she can’t be with Tyler, B. she is still clinging to her past with Matt. Matt was her first true love and she will want to give it another try but she will soon realize the past is the past, that she is not the same Caroline anymore and that, wishful thinking, Matt doesn’t really deserve her, that he can’t really accept her.
I don’t even know what I’m saying at this point, so I’m gonna stop.

Hi Cath! I love it when you’re up in my blog’s ask!
Your predictions make perfect sense to me, and I wouldn’t be surprised if many or all of them come to pass! I would imagine that Tyler would be going on the date as sort of an emotional defense mechanism. I can’t see Tyler knowing how to handle all these feeeelllllings very well. So, Urges Girl will become an honorary Thing Three, either a supernatural creatures, disposable body, or OMG even more crazily, just someone who can sees the TC chemistry and moves on to someone else.
LOL, I love the way that you are describing Matt at the party. Creeping is exactly what he is doing. I mean, he has NO RIGHT to be in any way upset about the situation. He mashed his potatoes, now he has to eat them. I hate That Guy – you know, the guy who is only it is for the chase, and when the girl is in danger of moving on, he just reels her back in. I hope he has jealous freak outs when Tyler/Caroline become a full on couple so that I can skewer him in my Got Forwood recaps.
My spec is the sex is real. Positive Forwood unicorn bunny Alyssa’s optimism has definitely had an impact on me. Just, the spoilers and meta reasons point towards them doing it and getting even more emotionally involved before their mothers get into the picture in 3×02. I’ll take any type of sex so long as it is CaroTy and not Caratt-y.
You raise an interesting point about whether Matt will swoop in and try to get Caroline back if the Romeo and Juliet thing drives Caroline/Tyler apart for a little while. I would much prefer him to be a good friend to both Caroline and Tyler and be one of their few supporters, having reflected on what a door-MATT he treated Caroline as. Now THAT would make Matt more likeable in my eyes, though ultimately I think he will never be healthy for Caroline, she brings out a bad side in him and vice versa.
Maybe Matt will become a willing beard for Caroline/Tyler – Caroline pretends she is with Matt when she is really with Tyler?

I’m going to be even more positive and say that while times will be rough for our favorite Vampire Barbie and Teen Wolf, that it won’t be enough for Caroline to say yes to Matt, even if he does come back around.
I don’t think they’ll actually split, or if they do, Caroline will be so heartbroken that she’ll be all “Who’s that? Oh, right. I forgot about you, you ol’ heep of mashed potatoes. Get back with you? Hahahaha. No thanks. Come back to me when you’re a french fry.”
That’s my waning optimism shining through (it comes out on rare days when I’m tired of being cynical LOL)
Yeah, I think we’ll see lots of secret hookups and hushed whispers, and TC trying their hardest to keep their relationship intact, along with jealousy issues regarding Matt.
But in the end, it’ll be clear where Caroline’s heart lies. Just sayin’.
I REALLY can’t wait to see Tyler stand up to his mommy about Caroline. All I know is when Tyler says (and he WILL say it this season otherwise I’ll egg the CW offices) that he loves Caroline, I will be dead. He needs to say it to her though and then while talking about her. I.e. “Mom, you know I love you, but I’m in love with Caroline and I’m not staying away from her,” or “Listen, small fry (aka Matt) you had your chance, and you lost it, and I love her and I’m not letting her go.”

You have a way with words, girl! Mashed Potatoes may go down in history as my favourite PG slight on a character, because of the sheer creativity of the insults and metaphors that you can associate with it. My hatred for Matt is probably so strong because I dated a guy like him once – passive-aggressive but appears nice to most other people, so it was difficult sometimes to put my finger on what was wrong with the relationship. I didn’t put up with being treated like dirt for long, despite my perception of him as a Good Guy. Here’s hoping Caroline will see the light! I didn’t have a Tyler to help me see it, so surely it’s only a matter of time 😉

Tyler standing up to Carol would have real meaning, because he obviously adores her. Remember how he got Mason to take off his shoes after they had gone running, or how Thing One and Thing Two danced around in their socks? Plus, he didn’t contradict her view of Vicki, which was cowardice because he didn’t want to not meet her standards for a girlfriend. Not to mention the adorable hospital forehead kiss. I think it’s safe to say their parent/child relationship is the most loving one on the show, and it’s only Caroline he would defy her for. Sigh! It’s really exciting to think of Carol being an obstacle, because I have warmed to her character, and I’ll be interested to see if she is presented as a shades of grey villain or black/white one. I mean, what if Caroline slips and kills someone? She has tight control over her impulses, but she’s still a bb vamp and could easily make a mistake. If Carol was introduced to the concept of Caroline being a vampire by seeing the aftermath of a gruesome death at Carolne’s hands/teeth ;), well then it makes it harder to outright hate Carol for trying to hurt Caroline.
I don’t necessarily want it to go down like that, but I am really hoping Carol stays as three dimensional as she became in season two.
Final word: I cannot STAND people who feel like they have ownership over their ex’s. It always amuses me that Matt got upset at the possibility of TC, considering HE had broken up with Caroline at the time. You can’t have it both ways, my friend. You’re either all in or out. (good Luke/Lorelai moment pre-screw up) 😉

Everyone pretty much summed up everything I thought when I saw the pics so I’m just going flail at that new TC still. I get super giddy at the thought of Tyler helping Caroline with the party. I just…it’s adorable.
Like everyone is predicting I think the M/C still is Caroline watching Tyler dance with Urges Girl and that Caroline does end up confronting him about it. How he handles the situation is what I’m most curious/excited about. Tyler hasn’t been one to dismiss Caroline’s neurotic bursts (the deleted scene being a perfect example) so I look forward to seeing how he directly approaches it and if he’ll question her motives behind the confrontation.

Gen!!!! I’m so hoping that Tyler makes some quips about Caroline’s uber planner side, but in a way that shows how endearing he finds it. Also, is it too much to ask for some glances that linger just that little bit too long during their early “just friends” conversations? A little cute awkwardness would go down well with me!
I would be surprised if Tyler didn’t confront Caroline directly if she compels Urges Girl, since unlike Matt he isn’t passive-aggressive. In Daddy Issues, he didn’t leave Caroline dangling for long before getting to the point about what he was upset about. In contrast, Matt would have probably frozen her out for weeks or gone behind her back without at least confronting her directly and giving her that much benefit of the doubt.
The quality of his confrontation of Caroline in that picture will be a really good indicator of how far he has come in terms of maturity, plus how deep his respect for Caroline is. At worst, I think he will be a little secretly gleeful if he realises that she is crushing on him! 😉

I’m still on the fence about whether or not Caroline would compel Urges Girl. I don’t want TC to turn into MC2.0 as far as recyling old bits. Like when Caroline compelled Aimee Bradly because of her jealousy with Matt. Granted, TC would do it better, but I want to see something original. IF Caroline does compel Urges Girl I would still fangirl lol. See what I mean? LOL. I can’t decide whether I want her to or not. The idea of Tyler coming to the realization that she could be crushing on him because of such behavior makes me very giddy though. I guess I could go either way. You make some valid points on the subject. 🙂

Candice Accola and Michael Trevino are so good at eyesex/flirting it is insane. I’m happy we’ll be getting a little vampining from Caroline for Tyler. Super sweet!
Good point about the compulsion scenario. I guess they could set it up to establish the difference between the two pairings? Last time, Caroline didn’t feel guilty about the compulsion (“why’s everyone sticking up for Aimee freaking Bradley?!”). It would be kind of nice for a vampire to realise the emotional repercussions that compulsion can have.
Either way, I hope compulsion at least comes up as a topic of conversation at some point, so that both Caroline and Tyler are aware that the other person can’t possible wield any power over the other person’s mind.
More than anything, I am giddy like you about the thought of Tyler squeeing about Caroline liking him on the inside. I like his cocky streak when it is tempered by his new maturity, so I can’t decide if I want him to smirk sweetly or not. So help me God, I want a little of pre and post “we people” Tyler!

I’m still curious as to which mother will be making the mistake that won’t be easy for the other to forgive. I’m leaning towards Carol because she might find our two lovebirds in a comprimising position after TC spends the night ravishing each other and somehow finds out that Care is a vamp. Since Liz has all summer to come to terms with not only Caroline being a vampire, but that her vamp daughter is hanging out a lot with Tyler Lockwood who is a werewolf. BUT Liz could make a move on Tyler if she finds out about the wolf bite. Hmmm…I need answers and I need them right now.

I think Carol’s going to be the one to make the move and it will be calling in Jack Coleman’s character (who we’re speccing is Mr. Forbes-aka Papa Forbes) and it will be to take over the Sheriff’s position in the council.
My theory is not only will it rub Liz the wrong way because it’s her ex and Carol is underminding her, but also because Liz knows that Bill’s (Caroline’s dad) view on vamps is more deadly and less understanding, and will kill Caroline if he finds out.
KW did make that statement about wanting to do the father/daughter element and how will he react to finding out about Caroline, so that’s why I think Jack Coleman will end up being Caroline’s dad.
And I’d love to know when/how/if Liz finds out about werewolf bites.

Ooooh I totally forgot about the Bill character. Interesting if he should turn out to be Caroline’s dad. I think it would add a more intense dynamic to the Caroline/Liz relationship if her vamp-hating Dad were to come into the mix. Also when a new vampire hunter is making his way to Mystic Falls.
Liz HAS to find out right? She can’t go on without knowing the dangers of Tyler and Caroline being together not only romantically but even as friends.
I more interested as to how Carol will find out about Tyler. Will she see it for herself? Will Tyler come clean? Or will someone spill his secret? How will it effect their relationship once she knows? All questions that I can’t wait to find out the answers too.

By all accounts I’ve heard, it is probably going to be Carol actively going after Caroline – getting her hands dirty rather than contracting the new vampire slayer in town to do her dirty work.
I’m actually glad, because I’m far more invested in Carol than Liz at this point, so seeing the mother I really care about attacking a character I love will result in fairly explosive emotional fallout for me.
I am very curious whether Carol’s actions are a heat of the moment thing or conducted with premeditated planning. We’ve seen such an antiwerewolf bias on the show that I am curious to watch a character justify harming one type of supernatural creature when her son is another. I wonder if the werewolf reveal will drive her and Tyler apart for a while or bring them closer together in some odd way. I guess for the R&J thing to work she would have to get closer. I wonder if it will also cause Carol to reassess her relationship with her dead husband.
So, yeah, seeing the events leading up to Carol/Caroline drama interests me very much!
Liz is absolutely sure to find out about Tyler being a threat to her daughter in wolf form. For one thing, she will hate Carol for trying to hurt Caroline, but for another she will be genuinely concerned about Caroline’s safety. One thing I will say about these writers, they don’t beat around the bush when bringing elements like that into play.
God, I can’t even allow myself to think how I would feel if Tyler actually bit Caroline. Good thing Klaus is still around to act as the antidote!
LOL, I wonder if Caroline’s Dad’s name is a nod to Bill from True Blood!

Awww, you mentioned me again in another of your posts. I’m blushing. Thank you so much. 🙂 Before I forget there are some cute pictures of what looks like Tyler helping Caroline with her bags. I don’t know if you saw these pictures or not, but I haven’t seen them before today and I just had to say how cute they looked together. Anyway, I think it’s funny how Matt is standing right next to her and she looks like she could care less. Also, her face looks like she thinks Tyler and Urges Girl are dancing way too closely. That or she’s thinking the other girl is a tramp. Either way it looks like she’s silently seething and wishing Matt would stop bugging her. Some people thought Tyler was taking a date to make Caroline jealous, but I don’t think so. I think it’s like you said. He doesn’t think she cares for him more than a friend, so he is moving on. That is so funny that you want to see Not Now Dana again. I remember being so happy when I heard that it was going to be an unpleasant encounter between her and Matt. I was thinking finally maybe she’ll get mad and they’ll stop having Matt use her as a doormat that he can wipe his feet on. I have some mixed feelings on the picture of Tyler and her during the confrontation. They don’t look too happy there. I like the idea of her compelling Urges Girl too. Maybe she tells the girl to go home or have her tell Tyler that she isn’t interested in him anymore or something. I could see him leaving angry and then maybe Caroline shows up at his house and explains her feelings. Then onward to sexy times. So yes, I am really excited for season 3. Is it September 15th already? Pretty please.

I DID see those adorable pictures of Tyler helping Caroline with her shopping. I mentioned on Cath’s awesome Tumblr that I love this sweet touch of chivalry, especially as Caroline is stronger than Tyler and hardly needs his help with her shopping! Once we get more spoilery goodness, like an extended promo, I will be sure to gush and squee like the fangirl you all know that I am and I know that you all are too 😉

Not Now Dana is kind of a mini celebrity in my Forwood world. She just dances around, completely oblivious to the supernatural shenanigans going on around her, interrupting Caratt action and acting as a Klaus mouthpiece. Every time she comes on screen, I just know that absolute gold is about to happen. I like to think of her as the quiet achiever Caratt cock blocker!
Honestly, I see more confusion on Tyler’s face than anger. I think Caroline will be a little upset and Tyler will be wondering what he did wrong. Just think of their expressions when he realises why she is acting so weird and Caroline tries to figure out why she feels so annoyed 🙂 LOVE!
I just need TC sex in my life like right now. That is all 😉

Hmm, their feelings coming to the surface? Figuring out how to be a couple when they are natural enemies (or rather their species), figuring out how to wash off spoiled rotten potatoes?

Spoiler post will be up tomorrow! I just have a few ideas I’m throwing around in my head that need to gel before I put the post up.
New and unexpected challenges says to me that a new character, whether Caroline’s new enemy at school or the vampire slayers in town, who somehow finagle an invitation to the party, start causing trouble.
“Small fry”. LOLing forever. Matt bashing will never got old for me. EVER! If he is less of a dweeb in season three, I’ll give him props, but it would be VERY hard for him to be redeemed in my eyes now. Having his heart broken into itty bitty pieces by Caroline would be a good start though 😉 *evil evil evil*
